Mumbai institutes 'no selfie' zones following death

Growing weary of the ever-present selfie? Mumbai, India now has several regions where taking selfies is no longer permitted, an action spurred by the unnecessary death of one woman. These fifteen no-selfie zones are places in the city of Mumbai that officials have determined are dangerous for snapping a picture of one's self. Places include the Girgaum Chowpatty beach.

Unfortunately, this move is the result of an 18-year-old woman's death; she drowned after falling into the sea while attempting to take a selfie. This isn't the first time officials in India have barred selfies, but is the first time it has picked permanent locations as being too dangerous. Previously, a Hindu festival was labelled a no-selfie zone due to the risk of stampedes.

Other places that have been labeled no-selfie zones include the Sion Fort, Worli Fort, and Bandra Bandstand. According to Mumbai law enforcement, the city may station "life guards" and caution signs at places where selfies are banned. "The police will now approach the city's municipality to prevent accidents at such spots due to people taking selfies," said a police spokesperson to BBC.

This tragedy isn't the first in India caused by taking selfies. Reportedly, a Japanese tourist died after falling down stairs at the Taj Mahal while trying to take a selfie. Similar tragedies have been reported in other nations, as well.
