My gf and I rewatched this recently. About the only way to really enjoy it is with the "so bad it's good" mindset, because it's freakin terrible. Bad acting, bad dialogue, completely derivative. Fun to watch, even more fun to laugh at. Its place in movie history is important, though, due to its great (for the time) special effects. A friend summed it up best as "a tech demo for other, better movies."

Unfortunately, I was born the same year the original TRON came out, so I missed seeing it in the theatres or any of that stuff. I don't remember the first time I saw it, but I do remember that I was young - much too young to realize everything that was going on (I just knew computers were cool and lightcycles were freakin awesome). I have a copy of the movie on my home media server now and watch it at least once a month, give or take. I've been pumped for the sequel since this time last year, and I get even more excited as the release comes closer.

I also hope that it retains some of the silliness of the original. I also hope it keeps some of the sweeping digital shots (remember the solar sail? Good goo!) and doesn't try to focus on the characters too much.

Good review. I just watched Tron for the first time and thought that it was kinda silly, although with some great ideas. You point out some good connections between the problems presented in the movie and real problems with information management. I actually missed those while trying to look for flaws in computer/programming representations.

Kinda dumb that back then actually considered computer effect cheating, while now they are the standard.
