Moorestown was a flop - no doubt ? but did intel exit the game ? No , they came up with Medfield (just to prove a point to naysayers that x86 can run on smartphones) and whats their next step , obviously to beat every other product on the market with their next generation ATOM - Stay tuned.

and ya, just to clarify few things. Android OS is not yet optimized completely for Multi Core ARM processors , essentially meaning that all the cores are not utilized completely. Very little was done by ARM licencees on that front. Intel is working on that front as well optimizing the Android-x86 for multi core utilization. For the timebeing their patented Hyperthreading technology on a single core is beating many Dual Core ARM chips.....and mid 2013 they are planning for Quadcore 22nm Atom SOC with IVY bridge graphics engine, And this is where , ARM ecosystem is gonna run scratching their heads,

being from a chipset design background for around 15 years, like many underestimated the idea of running x86 on a smartphone , but when i started working on it for the past 1year , i just realized that by 2014 Intel is gonna sweep the processor market by 2014 , huge architecture/design changes are underway for Atom SoC , and i think its gonna change the game all together , ARM ecosystem is gonna play the catch up game soon. A popular saying , "Intel Never Lost a Architecture War".....gonna be proved again......!

You've got a point. I will be very interested to see how their line of processors pans out. Hopefully we'll see some dual cores that will burst to 2ghz or more pretty soon. That will make for quite the powerhouse smartphone.

Being that a single core ATOM can actually hold its own against at least mid range dual core ARM would help lessen that worry. Mind that Intel will be offering a dual core version early next year. So it won't be single core only for that much longer.

Most phone buyers aren't very technical anyway and Intel is throwing some features like hardware accelerated 720P encoding, able to take a larger number of photos per second, etc. that may help it stand out to some.

You can probably make a pretty good comparison to how Nvidia entered the market... The first Tegra never went anywhere, just like Intel with Moorestown, then Tegra 2 took nearly a year before we saw any products and by then it was already starting to become a mid-range offering and that's similar to where Intel is now with Medfield...

Leaving us with the eventual 22nm update, which should be when Intel gets to where Nvidia was when it first introduced Tegra 3 and finally gets to the upper class range and then it'll just be a question of whether they can stay there.

Being in the mid-range for now isn't so bad though, it provides plenty of performance for a phone and let's people get used to the idea even if it's not immediately popular.

While Intel will have the dual core Clover Trail for tablets that should compare well to many present quad core ARM solutions.

Basically, consider this the point that Intel goes from being laughed at in the mobile market to people going to the "hmm" point... They may be still a long way from "Wow" but as long as they keep advancing they may still get there in another generation of devices.

Very interesting. I didn't know that. Being that its only a 4.3 inch screen it shouldn't need too much power. Still sounds outdated though considering even Windows phones are getting dual cores now lol. IMO it was a poor decision for Intel to come out with this single core chip this late in the game. Especially since the 1.5 ghz S4 is now the standard for mid to high range phones. The average uneducated customer isn't going to choose this over another newer android phone when this has a single core and the other has a dual.

Yes, Medfield is a single core 1.3GHz ATOM and it only Bursts to 2GHz as needed. However, performance actually compares well to dual core Cortex A9 devices and that was when the Burst mode was limited to 1.6GHz.

You'd actually need something like a dual core 1.5GHz S4 Krait to clearly exceed the performance of this Medfield but even then it won't be by a very large margin.

Though some apps may not work as well as others until more apps are better optimized for it.

Mind running Android is a lot easier than running a desktop OS.
