Not this generation, it's running Android 4 ICS, but it gives Intel it's first foot in the door for the mobile market and that's an opportunity to change a lot of people's minds that it's actually possible for x86 to compete in the mobile market.

Thing is as far as present gen Smart Phones go it's actually a decent offering and it's just the next gen 28nm Cortex A15 chips coming out later in the year that will eclipse it, along with all other present gen Smart Phones as well. Though by the time you can actually buy it that some of the next gen devices may start coming out as well.

So it's more or less just whether you like the phone or not that matters now. Along with of course pricing, which Intel may use it's leverage to make competitive.

Most people don't really care what's inside as long as it does what they want and doesn't really cost them significantly more than an alternate device. Though some may like the idea of having something different from everyone else, even if actual use isn't all that different. While the key for Microsoft is what they do next year.

Medfield is basically one of Intel's first ATOM SoC's, based on their present gen 32nm manufacturing, but they are moving to 22nm Silvermont in 2013 and that will bring a lot of changes besides just another die shrink. Since Silvermont will be the first major design change to the ATOM architecture that finally brings it up to date with the rest of Intel's offerings. While 22nm is key for bringing in some of Intel's newest tech advances like Tri-Gate Transistors that promise to provide a significant performance/efficiency boost.

How all that compares to ARM's 28nm Cortex A15 chips will then determine if Intel can become a serious contender in the mobile market. So it's more a long term deal as to whether you should care or not.

Uh, Medfield means it's getting a x86 ATOM CPU instead of ARM chip!

Look up ATOM Z2460 for performance and specification... Anandtech did some benchmark comparisons with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Droid Razr, Apple iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy SII, and Motorola Droid X2.

Looks like a Razr with software buttons... Hope they at least stepped up the specs. The 1.2 ghz in the Razr IMO is too little, too late. Unless I'm missing something Verzion isn't getting any real high end devices with major specs. IE, galaxy note. Which I very happily preordered today :D
