It should be great if the Moto Droid phone had a program to create and edit documents
of Word, Power Point, Excel, One Note, etc. I think it would be great tf it had a webcam and a stylus to.

The droid is a great phone. I’m glad it has a camera, since our digital camera died! I’m grateful that it has a 5 MP camera. I’m grateful that you can video up to 30 minutes at one shot. Thanks to you Rob, I didn’t know that until I found your site. This is a great site. I’m sure that I will be referring to it from time to time! Thanks for sharing all this great info about the Droid! Motorola Droid On A Fast Boat (camcorder demo)

This video was recorded on the Motorola Droid running the Android OS (v2.0) and uploaded directly from the phone to youtube. I wanted to see what the frame rate and resolution of fast moving content looks like after youtube does their compression on a Droid video. The boat got up to 40mph.

NOTE: As of this recording, there is no image stabilization software available for this phone.

It means new version of mobile phone compatible with 2.1 will have to be released!? Because you can’t upgrade for example G1 to 2.0.

I’m not expert but maybe if linux kernel version behind android stays unchanged then Droid could (at least theoretically) be upgraded to 2.1, couldn’t it?

That’s correct. I was told during my conversation with Moto/Verizon that they still have to approve all updates to Android. I hope the BIG one will add multitouch.

One noteworthy factor with the Droid is, since the implementation of Android is standard (rather than the custom interface on the Eris, for example) when upgrades are available they are quite likely to quickly hit the Droid. On a custom UI, the device will be left waiting for the device manufacturer to upgrade their compatibility.

I have high-hopes for the X-10, but am keeping my expectations grounded. The company that I work for currently pays for my mobile, so it would take quite a bit for me to purchase my own personal mobile and begin paying a monthly fee. My company has made that decision a little easier by taking away my Blackberry 8330 (which I loved) and replacing it with an HTC Ozone (which I hate). I've been tempted by the Droid, but the keyboard and the fact that my wife is on T-Mobile has prevented me from purchasing it. I figure I can wait for the X-10 in February, and if it doesn't come to T-Mobile or isn't up to my expectations, there will be a plethora of Android phones available to pick from.

Looking forward to the next 4 months, phone-wise.

I love my Droid. Im coming from a windows Mobile phone and wow what a big step .. I have seen many people say this phone sucks because it doesnt have multi touch but thats not true . the phone is fully capable of multi touch .. I made a video to show how you can do it and also save some battery life hope it helps out

Sorry for the incorrect info in the review, the in car-mount does not have a USB charging port – but there is access to the microUSB port in case you want to charge Droid up.

One question: you mention that the in-car mount has a USB charger built in. I know the media dock has one, but I thought the car mount left the port available, but did not include integrated charging. I’m happy to be wrong there, but can you clarify this?

Point well taken Vincent. I am not here to fight you. I actually enjoy your reviews and find them informative and insightful. I just wanted to make a point and yours is well taken. Unlike so many other reviewers who are just out for a slam-fest of new devices if it doesn’t meet their personal criteria. Case in point, Bonnie Cha of CNET. If it doesn’t have a physical keyboard, she makes a point to tell everyone that she always prefers physical instead of virtual keyboards. Thanks again for the great review.

On a side note, any inside poop on the HTC Dragon/Passion as an HD2 model in an android OS? I love the rumor mills as most of them are speculation, hyperbole and mostly BS. :)

What kind of reviewers would we be if we DO NOT explain the pros and cons in our review? When consumers buy a device they’re not saying to themselves — I’m paying for future features…instead they’re spending their hard earned cash on the out of the box experience. Furthermore, Google, Motorola and Verizon are mum about what features they’re adding or which bugs will get squashed. We’re not fortune tellers – but reviewers and as such we call it the way we see it.

One last point, I did mention in the end the following: but many of the flaws we’ve identified could be addressed in Android 2.1 whenever that arrives.

And you don’t think that as these issues are identified, there will be patches/updates available? I would think that this would be the normal progression as Android really is still in the crawling/starting to walk upright stage.

Such as? Keep in mind this is not the first Android phone – Android OS is now 2.0 so yes I do expect simple things like being able to add signatures to emails, global copy and paste, multitouch etc. As far as Droid’s hardware – there’s not a whole lot to complain other than the existence of the d-pad.

Hey Vincent, As always, nice review. I do, however, feel that you are being overly critical of many of the phones features this early on. Lest we not forget how buggy the iPhone was at first release and how far it’s come. Speaking of the iPhone, nice video on the battery usage of the Droid using an iPhone vid recorder. Unintentional advertising? LOL!!

I’ve reviewed my share of clunky phones in my days and Droid is anything but. Best of luck waiting for Xperia X-10. If a carrier doesn’t pick it up, chances are it’ll never make it stateside and even if you can buy one unlocked – there’s a big chance the much needed 3G bands for US will be missing. Other than that, SE have had a poor/non-existing record of launching phones in the US.
