The new Garmin S3 golf GPS watch is $349 and that is all it does is GPS for golf! The MOTOACTV has many more features (mp3 player, running navigation, phone synch, heart rate and more).

I like the MOTOACTV...best bang for the buck!

While I agree that the price is quite steep, this device is so feature-packed that it's worth the price tag. I got my standard 8GB version on sale for $199, and while I felt a little post-purchase guilt, that feeling quickly melted away after I became acquainted with the MOTOACTV. I'm not sure why this one is priced at $299 though. (Perhaps it's a 16GB with a golf specific version of the software?) It's my understanding that the golf features will be made available to standard MOTOACTV owners, so I'm not sure what the differences are, if any. Anyway, it's a given that a modern smartphone can do basically anything that the MOTOACTV can do, but it's never going to be as optimal an experience. The key thing to keep in mind is the fact that this is an extremely small GPS device that can be worn as a watch, clipped to your clothing, worn on an armband, or mounted to a bike. If GPS watches make any sense in a world where so many people are carrying GPS capable smartphones, then the MOTOACTV should be on top of anyone's short-list when shopping for such a device, steep price tag or not.

If you're going to write a story about what golfers will buy, do a little research. Visit a golf course and you'll see golfers with plenty of expensive items: laser rangefinders, gps rangefinders (hand held and watches), swing aids, etc. Even the shoes and clothes are more expensive. All Motorola needs to do is run a good ad campaign and convince golfers that this will improve their score. And for the golfers that run or cycle, this might be a "bargain" solution.
