MixBit aims to cash in on YouTube success on iPhone [UPDATE: Android too!]

With the creation of YouTube came the first widespread use of video on the internet – the creators of this phenomenon aim to see lightening strike twice with the app MixBit for iPhone. While this app may eventually be available for other mobile platforms such as Android*, the app itself is being launched initially for the top-selling Apple phone, where several of the original founders of YouTube hope a video editing and mixing community can most effectively take off.

Speaking up in an announcement earlier today, YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen made the case for another revolution in video for the web. Attacking what they perceive as a missing link between web-friendly device users and creativity in video form, the team is pushing MixBit to the palms of content creators in a product they hope will take on Twitter's video-toting service Vine and Facebook's recently video-friendly Instagram (at least indirectly).

*UPDATE: The MixBit crew now says to "expect [the Android app] to be ready to ship by the end of September"

"Today we want to remove the barriers to video creation. That means giving people intuitive and flexible recording and remixing tools so it's easier than ever to tell meaningful stories through video. It means inventing new ways to encourage and enable people to collaborate with each other. And it also means exploring new approaches to identity, such as letting people upload videos without forcing them to sign up."

Have a peek at an example of a MixBit video here:

It's been right around 8 years since YouTube saw its first video hit the web, and by Google's last count, YouTube was seeing 100 hours video uploaded every hour. It's this ravenous video culture that the folks now presenting MixBit are aiming to capitalize on.

The MixBit app is live this afternoon, and a webpage for the site currently offers such video categories as Concerts, hanging out, and of course Cats. Let us know if you're all about the mixing and re-mixing of your videos with this new service, or if you're planning on forgetting it by the end of the day!
