The reason it took so long is because of the enormous amount of data that must be handled to obtain such images. A trillion frames a second? That’s hours and hours of video at a “movie standard” framerate of 24.

Thanks to the earlier work of Professor Ahmed Zewail (Nobel Laureate 1999) on femtosecond laser, it was expected that such kind of Cameras would be realized one day.Is there any information regarding the spatial resolution of the Camera? What is the smallest object it can visualize?Ashraf Elkady

This reminds me of some Westinghouse experiments in the early 1970′s that photographed single photons of laser light from a neodymium doped glass laser. They used water clouded by a little milk to visualize the pulse and the shutter was opened by a polarizing substance at 90 degrees to another polarizing filter that changed its angle of rotation in the presence of bright light to open the shutter. I was in high school then and the author of the article sent me a copy of the original article. I wish I still had it. Now making a camera with frames that fast is quite an advancement. I am puzzled why it took so long to accomplish, though.
