The article doesn’t mention anything about multiplayer or server hosting, so the assumption is that it will operate in the same way that Minecraft does.

With some digging, you can find out that there will be a MMO-style multiplayer, which makes the fee a bit more understandable.

You’ve never tried hosting a server have you? Minecraft for even a small population typically required a dedicated server. As much as I would prefer support for running our own shards, running a server where every computer someone programs has to be emulated all the time would require more than most of us can afford to host.

I’m so excited for this I will not only tolerate a monthly fee, but also support it. I’ve wanted a game like this for so long. I almost signed up for Eve Online because of that.
