Apple is a funny company, they are by far the most evil company around using slave labor and so forth to keep their cost down and still all the fanbois go on about how MS is evil and so forth. In today's world Apple is misleading the general public. The saying is true "a person is smart but people are stupid" the masses will buy Apple because they are cool and look fancy but that's about it. Apple have always been form over function. Fanbois will always buy Apple because it makes them feel special like they are leading the way with technology. This come around because of the misleading advertising Apple has produced to do with its products. If you take a step back and look at Apple as a whole you will see that it is more a cult or religion then a technology company. Their followers believe anything Apple say blindly buying their devices because Apple said they are the best. When in fact most if not all are over priced and 2 class.

This article and the comments seems to miss the point when comparing Microsoft and Apple. People buys Apple products because they love Apple hardware first and for most. Case in point, many people buy Macbook Pro and Macbook Air and put Windows on them. Even when they do dual OS on these laptops, they still use Windows alot. I bet if they can put Windows on Ipad, they would too.

Kids do not vote with their wallets, their parents do. Many change their mind when they need to spend their own money for their new computer and they cannot afford a macbook. The younger generation wants to be different, but that fact is not different from years past. The younger generation always wants to be different.

Kids are also much more social than adults, and they have different needs. You cannot just assume that people will continue to use the same thing as their needs change.

Apple experienced a popular rebirth when the iPhone and iPad arrived. Android has successfully competed with iPhone but the iPad is still dominant.
It will be interesting to see how Microsoft deal with these issues. WP7 seems to be making some progress, but it still has some way to go.

As often as I see these adoring fans of Windows Phone in the comments of every article, you folks just don't show up in the sales figures. Here in the comments you outnumber iPhone and Android buyers 2:1, but it's not translating to sales.

So many switchers claiming to be disaffected by Android and OS-X and iOS too. Odd that those latter are growing at absurd rates and have practically impossibly high customer satisfaction figures.

It's almost as if these claims in comments have no relation to the real world.

I have been slowly switching from Apple to HP computers using 64bit Windows 7. I also have bought a Sweetwater CS450 for use as my main DAW.
I've been finding that though some aspects of Customer Support are lacking but CS450 and the HP Z800 are fine workstations that can be upgraded unlike my MacPros.
I'm also seriously thinking of upgrading my iPhone to the new Nokia 900 using Windows 7 mobile. I am tired of the cluttered and ugly cute icons of the now aging iOS. Sitting in restaurants surrounded by endless iPhones makes me think I'm in a cult movie: the Invasion of the Body snatchers.

Apple products are better designed but..and here's the real reason for switching.. OSX Lion is a mess and the merging of iOS cuteness with what was a serious workstation OS has finally made me cut the chord.

I've been playing with Windows 8 and it is a truly modern interface that does not pretend to be anything other than digital. Truth to materials you might say.

Microsoft makes some great products, but they really need to work on improving their image. And it's a slow process - Apple didn't just start being popular - they have released good products and marketed themselves as the innovators, the cool guys, the underdogs, the no-bs company.

Today, I'm seeing the reverse - Apple is starting to become lazy, while MS and others are busting ass trying to come up with something great - and in a few years, I'm pretty sure the situation will change, a lot.

As for the younger generation - they'll grow up and end up using Windows and Linux software anyway :-D, at least at work - last time I checked, the Internet and the business/corporate/financial world was running on 60% Unix/Linux and 38% Windows...

I'm about as big of an anti-Apple person as you can get, but you people are kidding yourself if you don't think there's merit to this article/opinion piece. It may or may not be the biggest threat, but it's a significant one.

Not only are young people choosing to buy Apple products, it's starting to trickle into their schools (or forced upon them) either via iPads at the elementary school level or via that college level initiative with their electronic textbooks.

Well said, if you are a apple fan you will love this article. its full of sweeeeeeet apples people can have fun. But coming to facts Apple is growing fast but only in USA and USA is not entire world. So face it for apple to grow in other areas other than USA they need to be innovative and expand their product range. They need corporate backing and huge software base.

The second thing they need to have is better security in their software. Many may say that their macs are virus free but to be true that macs are very vulnerable virus/malware etc.. but as they are not used in servers and in corporate settings viruses are not targeted towards macs but if they grow as predicted by this eminent author of this article they need to be vary of virus.

I want to see more than one player in computer world too, like the present scenario in mobile phone market. More competition means more innovation and more bang for the buck for users(consumers).

(sorry for my bad english)

It's simpler than that. Their real threat is competition. Whether it's Android on cell phones, or Mac OS X on laptops, or iPod vs. Zune, Firefox vs. IE, or Apache vs. Microsoft's web server - people don't tend to use Windows based products when they have a realistic choice. They built a monopoly on the desktop early, which cemented their lead for a long time, but very few of their products are best-of-breed. In the consumer space, OS isn't relevant for products like TVs or Classic iPods. It's relevant for things like Smart-Phones, but Microsoft's OS monopoly doesn't extend there. As smart-phones and tablets have increased in popularity, Microsoft's overall market-share has decreased. Of course, there are many things a computer is still required for, but more and more of them can be done by the web, where the client OS matters very little. (And where the host OS is nearly always some form Unix).

That said, PCs still sell more than Macs, so I have to have some doubt about the author's claim that " younger people are nearly always using an Apple product." It's probably the opposite, people using an Apple product are usually younger.

In fairness
to Microsoft they are pulling all the stops to attract the younger generation with

clearly aimed at the under 5’s market :-)

Well done STEVE BALLMER (slow clap)

I love it when this stuff comes full circle.

And I guess there was a point to your commentary. But I'm sorry I must have dozed off from being lazy. And I would point out the irony of someone calling my grammar lazy - yet referring to me to as the grammar police. But then I would be talking about something other than the topic of this article - which might be considered pointless. Ah well.

I don't know.

I have a lot of friends who are Mac/Apple users or own Macs, and a good chunk are "disappointed" with Lion, Mountain lion and where Apple is going.

Truth to be said, Around me, it seems that Windows 8 and windows phone has more excitement than whatever apple is brewing.

There is a mac in my household. It did run lion. But was "downgraded" to Snow leopard, Lion seemed to be too buggy and slow. That being said, it will be used to run primarily Windows 8 when the official version comes out. Matter of fact the Developer version and Consumer preview SALUTER both Snow leopard and Lion in performance.

And the same will happen with several of my friends.

Several of us are in the "creative" field (or shortly will be). And several of our macs will be replaced by HP machines since all the Professional grade creative software are specifically optimized to run on (high-end) HP machines.

Macs, no doubt, are great machines. But they are a great machine as how a Ferrari is a great machine. Utter sexy, but almost completely useless to do "real" work. And it seems that around every bend, Apple is killing the "usefulness".
