The only issue with the metro UI or windows 8 or any windows 7 phone is simply they are not photogenic. That is to say, most people who say they don't like it are basing it on pictures they have seen and not actual use. Once you use the UI it is simply amazing.

The 800 pound gorilla in the room is the rapidly growing tablet market, with laptops soon to start becoming hybrids, and the fact motion controls are coming to even desktops.

So let's not pretend computing isn't already changing and that it actually makes sense for MS to get ready for that change!

Besides, it's not like you have to upgrade to Windows 8 right away, MS will continue to support Windows 7 till 2020!

The biggest problem with windows 8 is the metro interface. COMPUTERS DON'T HAVE TOUCH SCREENS MICROSOFT! The interface is useless, it's the cart before the horse. Why would I want to upgrade to a software that has absolutely no relavence t the hardware I'm using it on. Another Ballmer blowout. Someone PLEASE get rid of that guy

I did try it, and customized it, and it still sucked to me :-)

The major problem as I see it is not the metro ui entirely, but it's just not very mouse friendly. Someone mentioned that you need to try it on a touchscreen. That's fine for tablets, but have you ever used a touchscreen laptop? It's not ergonomic, your arms get tired quickly. That's the biggest issue in my opinion.

I'm certainly not old fashioned or closed to new ideas. I'm a linux user who LOVES Gnome Shell! I've tried it all, and I just prefer the window management in Linux and OS X.

Microsoft just isn't aiming for the broad user base they've traditionally had, and I think it will bite them very soon ;-)

I have been using Windows 8 CP on my desktop PC tower since a month and a half after it was made available, pretty cool. I didn't find it hard to use because I am a "pro" after having used a Windows Phone since they came out. Anyone who refuses to be "open" about new experiences will be lost, much in the same way those who use phones with hardware keyboards on their smartphones "can't" use software keyboards or those who only use XP, MAC, iPhone, Blackberry and Android will not be as readily accepting of the Metro interface. Windows 8 has a lot of new features, many methods of interacting (touch, mouse, keyboard) and once the apps are taking full advantage of the new ecosystem, the ease of use can possibly follow...the problem is Evolution, do it.

@sgtguthrie:disqus , I think Metro UI is genius if you have the touch interface. at first, I also did not like the preview because I am PC user and in my point of view is that Metro UI will not work for desktop. But in the future when most PC will have touch monitors, then this is the best interface to have.. So just stop hating it just because Metro UI does not do the basics which your grandparents are used to, leave them be, there is an option to not use Metro. As for us, the youth, it is new and I think we will just adapt to it and I think I will like it as I do like the WP7 interface.

folks people really are different I am not worried about the metro screen in Windows 8 I get what it all about and have learned how to make it work for me. To me it is just an additional Windows screen to use which is OK because old Windows just had a sign in screen and then you were on the desktop screen. Now Windows finally gives it's users an additional computer screen that the user can configure to work for him or her and I hear all this flak about it looks ugly and ect give me the OLd dead Short cut Icon screen. To me that going backwards. Folks the old desktop screen is still there in Windows 8
don't be dummies and use the new metro screen make it work for you. get with the NEW. why are some People so set against trying somthing NEW, What do you want do you want Microsoft to be
OLD and dumb and not try something NEW. I do not think so. so be bold AND USE THE new ADDITIONAL Windows screen it's for free and you skip it if you want to

By myself no, but I see so many others reporting the same as me. Don't you? For me a big test was showing my parents. They've been using windows forever (they're in their fifties). They were so lost, and that's after me showing them everything! They can find their way around windows 7 pretty well.

So, I make my assumption based off of my experiences just as you do. Maybe you and your friends are a different demographic and like it. I'm not judging you am I? I'm trying to look at the big picture as I see it.

Maybe you shouldn't be so judgemental of someone you have never even met ;-)

oh btw, I do have ONE friend who likes it... LOL!

People are just resistant to change, while not all change is good people tend to be hyper sensitive and can easily turn what little that they don't like into the only things that matter to them and ignore everything else they may otherwise have liked.

So it remains to be seen if MS will provide a good enough balance that could satisfy most people and whether most people will give it enough of a chance to really see if they could like it or not.

For some though it's just too much change all at once regardless of what there may be to like about it...

1. Fast and Fluid is good for any software. Period.
2. Longer battery life for laptops/tablets = lower power consumption for desktops
3. Self-explanatory
4. Live tiles are here to stay, love it or hate it.
5. Time-saving is good for both computers/mobile devices.
6. "Roam experiences" sound great for family PCs
7. Making a PC a device not a computer = easier to use and understand software.

So I'm not really seeing which 4 don't apply to non-mobile devices. Maybe 4, 6 and 7 are subject to your own opinions but in general it sounds like MS is just trying to make a better product overall.
