If you’ve ever wanted to generate code for a full-fledged gaming console, but didn’t feel like hacking or modding your expensive machine in order for said code to run, Microsoft has a solution for you. Their recently-announced XNA Game Studio Express, the free version of the XNA Game Studio development program, is available now for download in a beta form. Currently absent is the XNA Framework Content Pipeline, but it should be added to the Express edition at a later date.

As of now, the beta will only run on Windows XP SP2; Windows Vista support will arrive when the tools reach their final release. Also, code generated by the beta won’t be able to run on the Xbox 360; you’ll need to wait until you can sign up for Microsoft’s $99/year “gamer’s club” before your code can run on Microsoft’s console. Still, if you have every intention of signing up for the club once it becomes available so you can show off your masterpiece to the world, head on over to Microsoft’s site and download the beta now.
