Allowing open source means more developers and number of available apps for the Windows 8 store. Think of it as creating more traffic for the business, just by raw numbers the chances of people finding and buying a app increases as you increase customer traffic.

Even if most go for the free apps, there will still be a higher chance that a pay for app would be selected as well. Especially for those customers that would not have bothered looking if the open source apps weren't there and are thus made aware of the pay for apps.

While not all open source apps are necessarily free. Things like allowing ads could produce profit that the developers may have to share with MS.

A lot depends on average pricing however, and how good the apps are, but it's a valid business move.

Especially since MS wants to promote the Windows 8 store and accelerate its development. Something they have to really worry about for Windows 8 for ARM, since it won't support legacy apps and would have to develop a data base of apps from pretty much scratch.

For Windows at least there are open source viruses and trojans, they just make up a small percentage of just over 10% of all the malware created every year. Mostly directed to applications like fraud and identity theft.

While Android "malware" issue is pretty limited right now and can be ignored by most but that can easily change if Android gets a larger share of the market. Since the main reason Windows is attacked so much is because Windows users represent the vast majority of users and thus present a huge target base for malware makers.

So as competing OS gets more popular, and more sophisticated, then the more attacks you will see directed towards them.

Meaning that since Windows will continue to stand to have a massive user base that it's far more likely to be attacked than the others. Mind however the increasing use of cross platform standards like HTML5, etc. means there's increasing cross platform vulnerabilities as well.

lol wut?

Are people really this stupid/ignorant? Open source has nothing to do with viruses or malware.. in fact I've never heard of an open source virus or trojan.

Also there are no viruses for Android, just a few trojans that only impact idiots... and those are few and far between. The Android "malware" issue is complete nonsense being trumped up by luddites who don't know any better

He's wrong, but a gnu license does conflict with apples policy of drm for apps.

Apple will allow it, but will remove it at the request of the rights holder(s.) It can get messy... One dick can prevent everybody's work from being used.

TL;DR is not Apple, but the GNU that's restrictive.

Actually Apple modified their terms to allow for open source projects.

Ask that vlc-hoarding son-of-a-Bitch Remi Denis-Courmont about it.

Apple has no problem with open source apps... As long as the devs don't.

DRM is the sticking point because its part-and-parcel with ios... But it conflicts with the gnu.

Ps, remi, FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU...

I believe there's plenty of apps on Apple's app store that are open source, like Growl for instance. Can you be more specific about Apple's T&C's that inhibit open source?

Doesn't make sense to me, especially since a significant amount of Apple's code from the browser (webkit), to their compiler (gcc), to their kernel (Darwin) is mostly if not all open source.
