Successful maybe, but only if Windows 8 is well received. for many folks (based on the commentary I've been reading of the early builds) the usability of the metro UI on windows seems to be a love it or hate it affair. ON a business setting (where implementation is notoriously slow) I really can't imagine that there will be a strong push for the metro UI (especially if there are touch screen requirements) when the alternate view option is essentially windows 7. Windows 8 popularity (or lack thereof) will surely affect adoption of WP8. The question is how much. personally I'm not convinced that people are all that interested in leaving Apple or Android for yet another platform, especially with all the negative feelings associated with windows based computing amongst consumers.

this could happen if and only if Nokia sales of windows 7.5 and windows 8 smartphones are so bad
that the company goes into bankruptcy forcing Microsoft to save the Company. Folks if the trends continue and the Nokia windows phone lumia 800 continues to sell well and the more powerful lumia 900 which will come to the USA sells well and Nokia quickly brings out a
windows smart phone with a front facing camera
that has skipe capability then Nokia will survive. Miocrosoft may however have to give them a few billion to contiue operations until windows phones sell better than they sell now

Very true. I totally agree. I think Windows 8 will really attempt to unify these devices, much like Apple did. And based on the simple fact that the majority of businesses use Microsoft products, I could see it being very successful.

That said, purchasing Nokia is something I have mixed feelings about. I fear that it may alienate alternative phone manufacturers. As seen with the Android eco-system, diversity of devices is a plus. I also fear that their stylistic design may suffer. Nokia has been developing very sleek and sexy devices as of late (a route I was surprised Apple avoided with the 4-brick) and throwing Microsoft heads into the future design mix is a scary thought...

If true, is anyone surprised? Elop is a career Microsoft guy and has behaved as such from the moment he walked in the door at Nokia. That said, I have to wonder whether buying Nokia might not be a bad move for MS, seeing how very little good will there is from smartphones consumers as a whole toward their platform at the moment. I strongly suspect that there will be continued minor adoption of the windows phone platform until after there is widespread adoption of Windows 8. once that happen, and if the experience is positive, then I could see people looking for the commonality and interoperability to be had between a windows 8 desktop and tablets and phones running windows phone with the metro UI. Until then, I see every little consumer interest in moving away from Android and IOS.
