Microsoft Tablets, Phones, PCs, and TVs To Ditch Windows For Single Ecosystem?

Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) hinted at ambitious plans for the company at uniting its various platforms for smartphones, tablets, and the Xbox into one single ecosystem. In recent months, the company has been streamlining at least the visual interface across its platforms, using the Metro UI styling from its Windows Phones for its Windows 8 and even the Xbox Live. New revelations now suggest that the company may completely ditch Windows for a new single platform by 2015.

President of Microsoft Windows Phone Division, Andy Lees, during the WPC 2nd-day keynote said that the company would eventually have a "single ecosystem" for PCs, phones, tablets, and even TVs. Instead of looking at compatibility of its phone and tablet platforms, Lees says that their strategy goes far beyond and aims to provide coherence and consistency across the PC, the phone and the TV, particularly with Xbox.

"You can have full PC compute power available in whatever form factor you like," said Lees. "We won't have an ecosystem for PCs, and one for phones, and one for tablets — they'll all come together."

This is very much in line with many of developments we've seen from Microsoft as of late, with the Xbox LIVE transitioning into the central media service across all its platforms, Windows 8 becoming a platform for both PCs and tablets, and some new core technologies that will allow full computing power in any form factor.

But Thisismynext speculates that the company's next major unifying OS could completely ditch the Windows moniker and arrive sometime by 2015. By that time, the Xbox 360's 10-year lifecycle and the Windows 8 3-year lifecycle will have lined up for a full revamp.
