The simpler Microsoft makes things for it's hardware partners, the harder it will be for them to screw up. They always deliver good software, and I'm sure Windows 8 will be no exception. Microsoft often gets a bad rap because manufacturers often slap it's software onto devices that can vary greatly in quality. With Apple's one-size-fits-all approach, you never see anything but $1000+ aluminum notebooks. With PCs, you see some very good ones and some not so good ones, all at the same time. And while a cheap PC often sells itself, another tragedy is that some of Microsoft's best products lack the proper promotion and advertising to be succesful. Until recently, Windows Phone has not been aggressively marketed, despite having a good lineup of handsets available. The Zune is another example of a product that was in many ways superior to the iPod, but never really got onto consumers' radar. If Microsoft leaves everything beyond the software up to manufacturers, there's no way to guarantee they'll get it right.
