More people on ICS than on WP in total though. A version of Android, that is being adopted very slowly, is available on few devices and is newer than the whole WP platform. Still beats WP in numbers.

For Microsoft's sake, I hope W(P)8 lives up to all the hype.

And for the record, I want them to succeed. Two players on the market is just not enough. But I've owned three Windows Mobile devices. And just the thought of my phone running anything from MS frightens me.

Happen to come by this article again, so lets update. It's been 4 months now. WP market share has not grown and according to some agencies/institutions/sites or blog the market share has actually shrunken.

I'll admit WP8 looks interesting, so I'm happy that's going well. Looking forward to its release.

But just to recap, from a communications and marketing point of view... this was a bad strategy. If you can't agree with that, I'm sure you could agree on thuis: just by looking at the numbers, it was not the right strategy.

I am actually an iPhone user looking to convert. Part of it is the fact that I want to get into mobile development (.NET web and winforms dev), with another part being the fact that iOS was a leap ahead of the competition back in 2007/8 - but frankly - it took them too long to figure out things that Android got right away. The platform moves really slowly and while apps are great - I think MS has the potential to really push experience upgrades. Their development tools are excellent and both their app store and windows phone adoption are increasing. Couple that with a sexy Nokia device about to launch - there is hope for this platform.

Uh, other than the Galaxy Nexus - who has a ICS phone anyways? I know some updates are rolling out - but my wife's Nitro HD /may/ see it this summer. She's dealing with reboots, and stutters in the mean time. Not exactly what I would call a 'fluid' experience for a flag ship phone w/ HD screen, dual core, 768MB of ram, etc.

Android has its strengths, but pointing to market share is like pointing to market share back in the days of PC vs Mac. Sure Mac had some minuscule percentage, but a bit of marketing backing a good product - that number has significantly change in the past few years. Of course while Microsoft is hoping people who got the 'free' android phone of last year will become converts - their real competition is iPhone users who are the most loyal to their phones. Android has good market share right now, but I expect that to drop a bit honestly after so many crappy android phones come back up for upgrades.

The problem is that WP would have been a refreshing new phone about a year and a half ago. Now, it's just another smartphone in a sea of them. MS really has to shake the tree hard to win here, they're just too late.

Anyone who has owned an iPhone or Android and has sunk any cost or effort into buying and tuning apps isn't going to want to start from scratch unless this phone can do stuff that theirs can't. MS can't just sweep up the bottom few that haven't bought smartphones yet, they have to displace Androids and iPhones and that doesn't seem to be happening.

One strategy that worked for RIM, before they completely lost their way, was to market to the junior high/high school kids with cheap phone/texting and a few apps. I think that might work here, but MS additionally should strike turn-your-head deals ($20-$30 per month?) with the off contract vendors (Cricket, MetroPCS, Virgin, Boost, etc.). That might be one strategy that would get THIS parent to take a look.

Specifically talking about this promotion 1) Tech blogs are writing about it 2) People are showing up at Microsoft Stores to get their phone, 3) They are trading in whatever phone they used to own 4) Experiencing a phone is much better than looking at it in an ad.

Yes, this is a huge cost and risk and maybe even seems desperate for Microsoft, but how else do they turn heads. WP is a refreshing new mobile software but people naturally choose the Default when offered too many choices.

Giving a product that's worth hundreds of dollars for free is hardly a marketing strategy. That's charity. In the ads they have you can see the features. Still people are not buying them.

Android and iOS aren't perfect, but why are people acting like this is some kind of genius marketing move or a way to "target" first time smartphone buyers? Uhm, they're kinda giving the phones away for free, not even a contract or a subscription to a service Microsoft provides is needed. Sounds more like they're getting desperate to me.

It looks to me as if the store (and Microsoft, maybe) is(/are) realising that no one is buying these phones. And that not even giving them away for free, with a contract, is enough to make enough people want to buy them. So let's just hand 'em out in return for anything.

To add insult to injury, the $10 gift card substite was not the wisest "symbol" for a Windows Phone. Kinda says: "We're giving 'em away for free, though we could've charged you ten whole bucks for 'em." A simple voucher might have been wiser.

Comscore numbers in January 2012 put Android at 48.6% of the market, compared to 29.5% for Apple and 4.4% for Microsoft.

I'm an iOS user, long time Microsoft hater, etc. etc. But I have seriously considered a new Nokia phone running Windows Phone (I got an iPhone 4S because they weren't yet available in Australia).

I really do think Microsoft have a winner on their hands. But I totally agree with you, getting the people without smartphones onto a Windows phone is the best strategy. These people are probably running Windows XP and Internet Explorer 7 and these phones will be the fastest computing devices they are going to own for some time. They'll love it.

Great move, WinPhone is much better than the Android Crap thats on the market including devices running ICS. Apple will always take most of the profits but for those that choose to compete for the bottom dwellers WinPhone should begin taking market share from Android Devices real soon.

First time smart phone buyers is the demograph I have been saying Microsoft should target for awhile now. The chances of them converting an iOS or Android user to Windows Phone is pretty slim. Now before people jump down my throat, I said slim, not impossible. Besides changing from a feature phone to a Windows Phone would be a smooth transition and most likely to appeal to people who think smart phones are "complicated" to use.
