Yeah based on the android tabs I've played with in best buy I totally agree. I've been running the win8 on my laptop for a while now though, and it seems to work fine, so it should be ok with decent hardware backing it up (not holding my breath for anything from acer, which is probably why ms made surface in the first place). Nobody has seen rt yet so we can't tell for sure, but based on the responsiveness of win phone 7 I am hopeful of ms's capabilities on non-x86 devices.

I will definitely say though, hardware does make a big difference. I am typing this on my 1st gen iPad, and sometimes I type whole words before the keyboard notices and catches up. Also, safari has a habit of crashing on me... I've had to type this whole post twice now :(

i mean ipad doesn't multitask as much, and this helps it up front with the user experience. it doesnt tend to get as laggy, over time. all three mobile os's are evolving to have all the others' features, so quality becomes critical. it will be interesting to see how microsoft models their response to apples jurying model. you can feel it between android and apple - android app store is like simtel, anybody can release anything there, and what happens is you get all these free apps that are spamming your notification and watching you. apple manages it better, and kicks crap like that out. and for the record, i do not use mac os, and never bought apple until ipod. no fanboi here, but i have to admit the ipad 3 with that higher than hd screen, it is just a world past the others. its insane.

So you assess windows 8 on an acer of all things, which comes with features like unoptimised drivers and old hardware. Wait for launch windows 8 hardware and it will be a different story.
And how can you expect all the top apps to be in the store when the OS hasn't launched yet?

I would not judge Surface by an Acer tablet. They're pretty well known for churning out uninspired, low-quality devices. (the same can be said of most Android devices - quality of one device doesn't reflect on the others).

I'm also not sure what you mean by "Ipad has limited the amount of chatter on the OS, compared to the others". I can see this being true vs. Android due to background apps, but I don't think this necessarily applies to Win8 RT.

Apps is a legitimate complaint, but I think that will be remedied when the full Win8 starts picking up.

I can't be critical of the surface hardware, as I haven't used it. While the environment looks promising, they apps have a long way to go, and I am surprised there are not more apps available, and that the apps that are available, are not that great. On Surface's Ebay client, for example, if I try to bid or contact the seller, it directs me to the website. It just seems like an unfinished placeholder of an app, and for me, that would be one of the flagship apps. So it will take some time for quality apps to emerge.

Since there hasn't been any official Windows 8 devices yet, how is ti fair to compare them to older hardware? You can't categorize surface hardware and the w500 together when its running on an older outdated device intended for Windows 7. If we are doing that than I will reply that my Windows 7 machine is amazingly fast compared to the commodore 64.

I have all three ipads, an android tablet and acer w500 windows 8 tablet. As far as my usage (mostly information browsing), iOS is slightly more polished than the others in terms of hardware and software. It's just a higher quality level. For example webpages really scroll smoothly on any ipad, but not so much on the android or the Windows 8 machine. Ipad has limited the amount of chatter on the OS, compared to the others, so it doesn't get as bogged down, the more that you use it. Ipad 1 might be getting a little outdated, but it is still better than the W500 and A500. Ipad 2 is next best because of the even faster processor, and ipad 3 is just amazing, the screen is higher res than any computer I own, even. Surface needs more high quality apps to catch up, and unfortunately, there is not a rush of those yet. I don't know what people are waiting for... I expected more apps by now. Android store is pretty decent, but they should kick ad/spyware out of there. The android skype client is not quite as friendly, it loses the video if you switch apps for too long.
