Microsoft reports record fiscal Q1 2012 earnings

Microsoft's fiscal year Q1 2012 ended on September 30, 2011 and the earnings results are in. The software giant reported record revenue of $17.37 billion, representing a 7 percent increase from the same quarter the year before. The strong figures were due largely to Microsoft's business products and especially Microsoft Office, which earned $5.62 billion, an 8 percent year-over-year increase.

The company's Server & Tools division reported $4.25 billion in revenue, up 10 percent from the same period last year, while the Windows and Windows Live Division reported $4.87 billion in revenue, up 2 percent year-over-year. Xbox also did quite well, although the specific figures weren't posted and neither were numbers given for Windows Phone sales.

Operating income came in at $7.2 billion and net income was $5.74 billion, up 6 percent from the same period last year. Diluted earnings for shareholders were $0.68 per share, up 10 percent year-over-year. Starting next quarter, the company's earnings will include the results of Skype.
