Wow. Someone doesn't read the news. If 400 million using Windows 7 is life support, then there's a lot of dead operating systems out there. Remember, compare apples with apples. IOS and Andriod are great mobile systems, but there just that... Mobile systems, not true OS's.

what will you do with that computing power?
for that to make sense, you must have the software, dev't tools etc you normally use with a PC running linux, windows or with a Mac.
gaming? not in a million years. see the heat dissipation system for gaming PCs?

The Lenovo version was switching between ARM and Intel however, and didn't fully integrate the usage but was more a two in one and switched between Windows and Android. While others who also have played with the idea also involved switching between two very different platforms.

So since this involves pretty much only altering the level of performance and power usage that they can probably patent it.

Also with variable TDP chips becoming available they could have one CPU handle both modes for a less costly approach than having two distinct chips alternating as needed. So not all versions of this may cost that much more...

Lenovo has already had this idea in the a few years ago. They have made working prototypes of a windows laptop when docked and and android tablet when undocked. Microsoft is not playing nice here. It was Lenovo's U1 Concept.

This is a fantastic idea. Love the possibilities of a laptop/tablet hybrid. Factor in Windows 8 having the ability to switch between the two, and this is could be huge. I'd consider choosing something like this over a traditional laptop, where I'd only use a tablet as a secondary device with my laptop.

How is this extremely obvious idea worthy of a patent?

Or in the larger context, why is almost every patent I see in the news a junk patent?

I've been thinking ASUS should consider this kind of thing.....if they could have a second CPU in the keyboard that then gives a boost to the device when it's docked, you'd have a powerhouse in terms of a mobile device with a lot of muscle. Go into tablet mode, and you have an energy sipping tablet.....dock it, and you've got a beast.
