The iminent failure of small drives may be true, but the great thing about DE is its ability to combine drives of various sizes and combine them into one large pool. My current WHSv1 machine has a 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB drives that operate as one volume of 4.5TB. It's not just about small drives...large drives take advantage of the pooling features...and it has none of the complexity of RAID in the home environment. You clearly have never used WHS or you would understand why this is such a big issue for those of us who have built our home networks around the product.

1 TB and 2 TB hard drives are less than 100 dollars.

Man up; those old, small drives you have are almost certainly going to fail soon anyway.
