MeeGo and Maemo run on standard Linux, with swap enabled. Here, background apps do not consume many resources, because when you don't use them they get swapped away; unless of course they keep waking up. Switching from one app to the other is slow because getting them back from the swap space is slow. But new handsets should have much more RAM than the N900, at least double the quantity, so this phenomenon should be less visible.
I, for one, prefer a system which degrades with grace when I open too many applications, by becoming slow, instead of popping up error messages like "out of memory - try closing some applications" (Symbian) or closing applications without asking me or even making me aware of it (others).

While you are right about it but 1st, as much as each of us want it to be fixed, it can't be fixed I think because each running app consumes resource hence there will be an obvious delay when the load increases. 2nd, considering the mobile devices, including tablets users might not go this far in using apps at once or hopefully users will keep in mind to close some unused app once in a while.

Perhaps a function to remind unused apps can help in this situation.

On the side note tho, I don't want apps to be hang as paused in my multitasking machine.

Maemo's way is great until there are a ton of open apps/windows. I find that any more than 8 and it gets pretty unweildy. That's probably more than most people will have going at a given time, but it's something that needs to be considered.

Meego seems to be coming along. I'm sure Nokia has a whole lot more planned for their Meego-Harmattan project.

Important to note though- the multitasking is more akin to webOS's "cards" than Maemo's multitasking. This is somewhat disappointing as, while the cards are nice, you must do some flicking around to get to the app you want. Maemo OTOH, allows you to see all of your apps at once and pick whatever one you want to go to with just one touch. It's a far superior system if you ask me and one that I hope Nokia keeps for the N9.
