WP7 doesn't even multi-task. What is Nokia thinking ? If they had to change then why not Android. It seems Nokia is now dead, what a shame. My N8 is the best phone I have ever had, and that includes an HTC desire, N900 and a Samsung I900. Just as things realy start to work well, they pull the plug. No port of QT to WP7, a total; disaster and betrayal of developers and Nokia fans. I do hope that idiot at the top reconsidders.

I want to believe this also, and Nokia has always been much better than their competitors at providing support for older models, but I just don't see the E7 as the same device it was on Thursday. Before the announcement the E7 was a beautifully crafted device with OK software and great promise of quickly becoming the ultimate business device through constantly updated and improved software. Now it's a sort of a kamikaze device that isn't likely to get as much support from Nokia and none from elsewhere.

This is why I had no choice but to cancel my preorder. Once PR2.0 is out and the E7 easily available at the stores I will take a new look at it. If the whole package then seems good enough to get by with for the next 1-2 years without any further updates I may yet buy it. Even then, I am not completely sure that I would pay the 600 euros for it I would have a few days ago. At the moment there is nothing else to buy instead of the E7, so I will wait, but if there is a new iPhone5 in June I or if HTC finally manages to come close to Nokia's build quality...well, E7 will have become the best Nokia there never was.

I realize that a group of people smarter and better informed than me made the decision to jump to WP, so I guess the game is not yet over. I wish Nokia all the luck with their WP-models and will keep an eye on what's to come.

Karen, PLEASE hear us out on this. We have always loved Nokia because of the choice Nokia has always provided. We love being different, we love having beautiful and strong hardware, and we love supporting those who support open mobile platforms and innovation. Pentaband phones were just a dream, and now is that dream going to be sacrificed for the will of a HUGE corporation that only has shareholder interests at heart?

If Nokia switches over completely, what happens to all of the individuality and customization Nokia has stood for? Will your supporters and devs still trust you after this move? Will Microsoft now be able to control you?

I don't want to give up on Nokia--but something about this seems very bad. I love WP7, it is beautiful, but its closed architecture is just not good for your fans.

Nokia media relations here....You can expect continued modernization and UI enhancements for your Symbian device. We have 200 million Symbian device customers and expect to sell another 150 more Symbian devices including new Symbian devices to come.

Our strategy announcement about this strategic relationship with Microsoft is one of the things announced in our overall strategy. Let's continue the discussion and as always we will announce things when they are ready to be announced.

yep, basically Nokia is saying, "don't buy any of our smartphones till 2012 or 2013." And by that time Android will have eaten all of Nokia's smartphone market.

Unfortunately there are more ways than one to kill Symbian and E7. Nokia may not be putting them in front of the firing squad right now, but the stranglehold seems intent to just the same effect. Announcing that WP7 will take over as the primary platform immediately and showing graphs where Symbian is quickly reduced into nothing will surely stop developers from pushing ahead with current projects and consumers from buying Symbian hardware.

I was expecting WP7-collaboration (closer office integration, maybe Qt apps on WP7 and even Windows), but I was not prepared for surrender on this scale. MS OS, MS App Store, MS Ads all mean that Nokia will be hemorrhaging money to MS. Let's hope they know what they are doing.

You mean that, besides officially stating that their products suck and their competitors' rule, that they're as desperate as a man jumping off a burning oil platform into the sea, that they're firing their engineers, that current Symbian devices won't be updated to WP7 but will be joined by WP7 lookalikes in the following months, that current development tools will be replaced with Visual Studio, and finally that any investment in Symbian and/or MeeGo is pointless by showing a graph in which a big rectangle labeled "Symbian" becomes a small rectangle labeled "Windows Phone", they won't be doing anything else to kill the sales of their own Symbian products?

To paraphrase South Park: "To all our current users and developers we want to say: We are sorry!"

True, but I expect it to eventually disappear, at least in the phone market. I suspect there will be no upgrades or app development for Symbian phone platforms over the next few years based on this statement from their open letter.

" Nokia will adopt Windows Phone as its primary smartphone strategy"

So, what can I expect in the future for a Symbian phone I purchase today?
