You liberals crack me up.  If you weren’t so damn scared of nuclear power and improbable nuclear meltdowns all over the planet, we would all be running off an extremely renewable, clean, and efficient power source and 80 percent of carbon emissions attributed to your fictional global warming would be eliminated.  

And now you say that particle research is going to make a black hole that will suck us all up and destroy the world.  This crap gets to be so repetitive I swear everyone is getting together to make one gigantic global flash mob playing a prank on the few individuals that missed the memo.  

Fire is tangible. You can see it, smell it, feel it. It is and always was understandable, though perhaps not always understood. You can observe its behavior and test it. It is fundamentally provable as to how it works, why it works, what it does. Gods are not provable. If aliens showed up tomorrow and said “Oh hey, we gave your species the idea of Christianity about 2000 years ago” then religion would expand to encompass this and answer even larger, unprovable, questions. Who is God’s God?

If you are mathematically inclined, you could say that religion exists at infinity. As knowledge pushes further and further outward, religion exists to fill that infinitely empty void outside of our understanding that we could never hope to fill in hundreds, thousands, or millions of generations of our species. Faith exists /by definition/ just beyond our ability to test it, and thus /by definition/ coexists with science as a fully orthogonal space of thought.

When it is impossible to determine a “correct” answer from an infinitely large set of answers of equal probability, there is little more one can do than pick the most personally aesthetically pleasing answer. That answer takes the form of one’s religion.
