How hypocritical considering that universities are constantly stealing the ideas and work of the students to pay to attend. In order to graduate, students are forced to give up any rights to the university. Graduate students are the ones doing all the research and the work, but the university and professors take all the credit and now apparently they want money as well.

I am quite pleased to know that universities will soon be dead. Online learning will completely replace this antiquated system of exploiting children. The only question is how to deal with all the money that has been stolen from children. I guess if this story is a precedent, then we will simply go after the assets of all the individuals involved. Take every penny and then make them leverage themselves over their heads. Then throw them out into the streets to die in the cold, but promise them jobs at the same time for good measure.

Yay, innovation. In lawyering. :( //sarcasim

Did they steal the concept (idea) or the code (implementation). Stealing the exact code would be wrong and sue worthy, but "stealing" the idea that one could optimize the way the head retrieves data for the benefit of noise-reduction would be the equivalent of a company offering someone buying a car tire a choice between different tread patterns. If we don't allow for multiple implementations of similar designs, then how is technology going to advance? Seeing how easy it is to get vague patents these days, it will amount to a future of a few large companies strong-arming every potential start-up out of "protection money" to use their patented "rounded rectangle" design patent. Good thing start-ups have lots of money, oh wait.

We need a serious revamping of patent laws, sooner, not later. Who do we have to yell at to get this ball rolling? Why is it 2013 (almost), and we are still bitching about this? A child can see that it's broken. It's not like curing cancer or fixing the weather, it's a god-damned bureaucratic issue. Fix it bureaucrats, that's what we pay you for.
