I totally agree!
Why are they making the Macbook Pro into a Macbook Air? If I wanted an Air, I would just buy that. This makes me sad. :(

@ Sundeep S

Then I wish you the best of luck trying to get a lossless version of your favorite songs without a CD player, because stores like AmazonMP3 or iTunes will not have it.
CD quality > those stores' music files

I also wish you luck when trying to play your favorite songs in your car's speaker system because a headphone-out to car speaker connection sounds terrible compared to a CD player to car speaker setup.
Car's internal DAC/amplifier > portable 'everyday' external DAC/amplifier

And yes, you are quite right. Your flash drive could never do what an optical drive does.

This is the most half-assed mock up of an idea that is completely stupid...if apple were to have a dedicated boot drive they would not encase it like in the picture - the boot drive could be a single chip mounted on the motherboard... and apple will have been working to boost battery power but maintaining its size or making it smaller - they dont want a huge battery!!!
For a long time people have been wanting wanting bluray - especially with HD movies and home editing - so i very much doubt they'll drop the disc drive...
there is also the rumour of a new keyboard that takes up less space and to make a bigger track pad with better recognition!
The person who made this picture should be shot for wasting peoples time!

I strongly agree with the new Macbook Pro concept, we rarely use optical drive in the entire year, however we using HD and battery everyday, thus it is more important to sacrifice the space for optical drive to replace with more important usage like HD and battery.

Even some people use the optical often, it is qute easy to use Share Disc or attach USB drive.

An Optical drive takes the processing and boot times long periods of wait and substantial work on the processors, and motherboards on the laptop itself. It creates lagtimes, and constant overuse. Will SSD will allow for quick and more responsive essentially, Apple is looking to load the OS on one drive, and have the other for storage. this method makes the laptop itself increase speed substantially. As stated in the artlce the battery charge time will increase due to the increase in battery size, but we might also see an increaee in battery due to less energy being used to run apps, and use the laptop itself, from the SSD and Hard itself being two different units.

The downfall being a loss of a disk drive. Is it much though? I would say to say the least, to buy a external drive, for about 20-60 dollars, would make it worth it? Carrying a small drive, won't harm you much, also notice technology has offered many avenues, for downloadable content, and Updates ect, to be found on the web via apple, or other sites. Disks will eventually become obsolete.
-Itunes (downloadable music, movies, books, cast, tv shows)
-Must External unit plugins/extensions can be found on the web, via software sites, or even the company site for free!

The biggest factor we see in apple is pricing, and this will only help those who intend to purchase one of there products at such high costs. As of right now, a 13inch Pro standard, with no feature upgrades, is $1100. By inovating this technology into the laptop, apple is allowing the sales to increase by price droping. The laptop itself becomes cheaper to make, and more flexible in its unit.

If it is true that Apple intends to use liquid technology on these new laptops, then we will find longer lasting physical durability! Less screens will be unproportionally closed when closing laptops, hinges will last longer, and metals will be more durable. Internal and external metals will be more capable of handeling the movement, and everyday use. After all how often do you close your laptop?

This laptop will only become better even after the update this year.

Yes I'm aware that I can get them from outside sources, and that is exactly what I do because it's the only way really.

The purpose of the Mac App Store was to be a place where you could get
any software you want, digitally, as is the case for iTunes and their
music/video/podcast/radio/book selections. Mountain Lion's Gatekeeper
feature only allows downloads from the App Store since they are
considered safe and is on by default (I believe). You can turn it on/off
as you wish, but If Apple continues to go with the Gatekeeper ideals,
app developers have a long way to go to get their apps approved.

As mentioned in a previous post, yes the external CD/DVD/Bluray dongle
would be a valid option, but many users still want it built-in.

Although I would like to agree with you, and it is true that that's an option, I usually want what I pay for. A $1500+ 'power' laptop with no optical drive is unacceptable for my purposes and how often I use it. I don't like to carry around extra dongles for things that I want done with a laptop. A similar concept can be applied for a laptop with no hard drive slot. Why carry around an extra dongle if it should be built-in? Lots of people use the hard drive as many still use an optical drive.

If I wanted a 'thin and light' laptop, that's what an ultrabook is for.

You DO realize that those things, like (old version) of Growl and and any other programs you want NOT on the App store are still available as downloads from those vendors online right? There is NO need for optical drive unless you want to burn a CD or DVD. I still do those things a lot and read discs a lot but I agree it could go away. I would probably buy the new Samsung super slim optical drive for when I needed it and call it good. Not a big deal really and especially if they add more battery / solid state boot drive with like 15 hour run time or even the nice high def screen.

I use my optical drive ALL THE TIME and I know tons of others that do too. Students with MacBooks still own and watch DVDs. Most students I know use their computers instead of owning DVD players. sure, it's not technologically cutting edge, but it is what is commonly happening. I hate that they're getting rid of these. As someone who watches DVDs and has to make DVDs and CDs for professional reasons, I really don't want to have an extra component that I need to carry around all the time. Maybe I'll get an old macbook instead of the new one.
