Mac app PhoneExpander frees up storage on your iPhone or iPad

At launch, the 16GB option for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus seemed entirely too limited. If you were one of the anxious bunch who snapped up a new iPhone with the smaller memory option, or have an older one with a similarly svelte internal storage, we've got good news for you. A new app for your Mac can help clear up some space, and even tell you which apps might be soaking up more memory than you'd like. Even better, the app is free.

When your iPhone or iPad has a wired connection to your Mac, PhoneExpander checks out your storage space to see what the issues might be. Things like cache clearing and app tattling are what PhoneExpander is best at, but it will also tell you what photos might be too large to keep on your device.

PhoneExpander says the exam takes about ten minutes to run (our run-through was much faster), and works much like iTunes. The difference is that PhoneExpander wants to take files off your device, while iTunes typically wants to feed you more.

If you're asked to remove pics, PhoneExpander moves them to your computer, much like iPhoto offers to do when you connect your phone to your computer. If you remove apps, you'll have to re-download them from the App Store.

The app is free for the time being, since it's in beta. We don't know what it will cost once it's out of beta, or if beta testers will need to pay anything (or be offered a discount). For finding large files, apps, and clearing cache, PhoneExpander might be the best tool we've come across yet for iOS.
