A tip sent to SlashGear has noted that porting Linux to the Zune is very much alive in the Zune community. “Yes, I’ve been working on it for quite awhile,” says Mys Videl, on ZuneBoards.com. “[It] has a lot of bugs to work out and a lot of features to work out.”

There would be tons of opportunities for new solutions is Linux will be able to run on the Zune. Open-sourced programs could be created, existing software could be used on the Zune, and most importantly, the Zune could turn into more than just a video player. At this time there are no pictures or videos of Linux running on the Zune.

Mys Videl is working very hard now at putting Linux on the Vune, and if you would like to catch up on her progress, log onto the discussion boards over at ZuneBoards.com.

Thanks for the tips Kostas.

I don’t understand… you want to install linux on an MS product to make it more feature-rich. why would you want to sponsor MS like that?

If you were saying “we want to demonstrate that linux can run even on a zune”, I’d understand. but this? nope… sorry…

well linux and open source is about freedom, even though it’s a proprietary product, is it still freedom to choose what to do with it on mods wise.

While i understand it puts money in microsofts pockets sometimes it is really worth doing…

Hell do it for no other reason that it probably freaks them out and pisses them off. You know they are going nutz about this and feel threatened by the concept of control being lost.

Personally i would love to have seen Ballmers face when they told him linux was running on the Xbox. Now that would be one for YouTube.
    :-)

Microsoft sells their software at a loss. It doesn’t help them at all.
BTW the only reason to put Linux on the Zune is because it’s FUN. That’s the best reason to do anything.

The Zune processor is made for this. Read Mys notes on the Zune board. I have a link to them at http://www.zunetard.com under news 12/29/06. The logo on his last post is a must see.

I agree with Name - do for fun and just because we can. Plus it would be a slap in MS’s face saying…hey look we’re running linux on your crappy Zune player (sorry, no love for the Zune from me…)
