Lightors rechargeable batteries promise over 500 uses

Batteries can get to be a very expensive proposition if you are buying normal throwaway units each time. Especially if whatever you use them in is something like a video game controller that gets lots of use. Rechargeable batteries have been around for decades as a cheaper alternative to throw away batteries, but normal rechargeable batteries have their own quirks.

A new type of rechargeable battery has turned up on Kickstarter seeking funding that charges via a USB port rather than a big charger that plugs into the wall. Not having to buy the batteries and big charger may save you some cash. The Lightors batteries charge via a normal micro USB cable you will probably have on you when traveling for charging Android devices.

One of the big features of the Lightors batteries is that they can survive up to 500 charge cycles. The batteries have a cover that hides the micro USB port and other than that charge port, they are sized and look just like any other AA or AAA battery. That means they will work in any device that uses AA or AAA batteries.

The project was seeking $15,000 and has raised over $33,000 so far with 25 days to go. A pledge of $5 or more will get you a two pack of AA batteries, at least if you buy before the seven left at the time of writing are gone. Luckily, the normal price on Kickstarter isn't much more expensive. A pack of AA and a charge cable can be had for $8 with AAA batteries costing the same. Shipping is set for July.
