Spending nearly $2,500 for a set of washer and dryer is serious business. While I love LG mobiles, the consumer electronic department is leaving an extremely nasty taste in my mouth.

LG WM2487HWM

We bought their top of the line washer WM2487WHM and dryer at Best Buy right before Christmas and they were delivered and setup yesterday. On the day of delivery, the washer would just spin and spin and spin some more without dispensing any water. So I called Best Buy in Tempe, AZ and the manager was kind enough to rush out another unit today. So I thought, way cool – BIG kudos to Best Buy for going above and beyond the call of duty.

YouTube Preview Image

Well, here’s the thing, the second washer, the one I briefly referred to as a piece of crap a$$ washer in the video above — has a great feature. The feature will let you pick any cycle you want as long as you only want the Cotton/Normal cycle. Yep, isn’t it great?

So I decided to call LG hoping there was some master switch or combination of buttons I can click on to reset the washer. After being on hold for nearly 25 minutes, customer service came online to tell me that there’s nothing they can do except schedule for maintenance. Excuse me, maintenance on the first day out?! Oh, ok thanks for your help.

I then decided to call Best Buy back. Unfortunately Best Buy is out of stock on this model (around town) so the new one is coming in from Flagstaff in about a week. Wahoo! Thanks a lot LG. Your consumer “home” appliance division is now on my sh!t list.

User error? Is your head screwed on right? The manager of geek squad and supervisor of the home appliance dept. Was at my place trying to get this piece of crap to work. Two defective units! Watch the video again!

Keep in mind that I’ve burned over 6 hours of my time waiting around for the Best Buy, waiting for the installation and even worse being on the phone with Best Buy and LG. Going through this painful process once is bad enough, but twice on the same exact model?

I’ve had an LG combo washer/dryer for about 4 years now, works like a charm.

Our only hiccup was when we washed something that shedded, it clogged up the inline water strainer. Cleaning that was a bit of a hassle, but doable, and quickly fixed the problem.

Overall I would buy another LG washer in a hearbeat. Sorry about the frustrations you’ve had, but hopefully when yours gets fixed you’ll appreciate the efficiency and quietness of it.

    Good luck.

I have an LG fridge that broke its door hinges within a few days of being delivered and an LG microwave whose buzzer doesn’t work anymore. They are good looking, nicely featured, unreliable appliances. Until recently, there were no places on line that you could order replacement parts, either.

Don’t blame LG! It sounds to me like your Best Buy installers screwed up. The first washer was most likely in demo mode. And the second one probably didn’t have it’s shipping bolts removed. Getting two lemons in a row sounds a bit far fetched to me. But hiring a bunch of morons to keep up with holiday delivery demands seems a lot more likely.

I used to work for best buy, and I can tell you that it’s very probable Joe is correct. If it involves technology and training best buy is absolutely horrible at making sure its employees are capable of responding to customer needs. Why do you think they abandoned their in-home tech services and bought out geek squad? The simple answer is they couldn’t train their employees and implement a successful technically oriented service in house.

LG frontloaders are designed to be installed on “solid flooring” which means concrete. If you install inside your house, you are most likely going to get extreme vibrations thoughout the house.

Funny, the sales people didn’t mention that little tid-bit and of course, it’s the consumers fault for not reading the installation manual that is not available until after the piece of crap has already been installed.

And, no, it ain’t the shipping bolts…

My husband just purchased the LG 4.6 steam-washer in cherry red yesterday. It was beautiful….. but needless to say – it is in his truck being returned to Sears for the very same thing that Vincent N. had wrong with his washer!!! The cycle was broke and would only stay on cotton – not to mention the water temp light was not working….so I did not know if I was washing on hot or cold. Last….after just one load of washing it went into the I am not working at all mode. I thought I just had a lemon – but now after reading all of your comments I am thinking the model is crap like Vincent said?????

  18.  Jackie   View all comments by Jackie  -2  Add karma Subtract karma

Had to post again – upon returning washer to Sears store – my husband said the gentleman from Sears said that this was the 6th LG washer (same 4.6 steam type model) to be returned this month!!! Pretty scary with a price tag of $2,500.00 for the washer/dryer.

  19.  Scott   View all comments by Scott  -1  Add karma Subtract karma

I bought this washer and dryer too. LG came-out 4 times to fix problems with both units.
The washer control circuit board is crap and cannot take any stress. I found that if I loosened the screws holding it in the cheap plastic panel, then the board was no longer stressed and it started working again. The LG repair guy replaced the board twice before I figured this out for him.

My washer and dryer are out of warranty now, so I have been fixing them myself. Finding parts for these babies is fun too because they refuse to sell to consumers. They have already stopped making some parts for these models. So soon I will have to just throw both units away.

I purchased a Kenmore Fridge from Sears about the same time (for a new house). It too is starting to have problems. I learned today that it is actually made by LG. It has a leaky
drain water pipe. It also has a cheap plastic door latch that has broken. The latch should cost about $2.00 But it is riveted to the door under the door seal. So you can’t buy just the door latch, Sears/LG says I need to buy a whole new door for $300. I also learned today that this Fridge has a recall order from the Fed. Gov. because of a faulty compressor capacitor that can start a fire.

Note: LG is a Korean company that is a merger of the “Lucky” soap company and the former “Goldstar” electronics company (also known for “high quality”).

How about buy a Maytag or Whirlpool, you know American Made appliances. They will have larger higher torque motors, better valve seals and last much longer. You might even keep a blue collar worker from being laid off.

    Mike,
It would be nice if they still made those brands in the USA. The Whirlpools are made in Germany, Maytags in Germany, Kenmore’s all over the place. Sorry. They are at least american based companies. The shareholders will appreciate it. Sears will too.

Love my LG washer and dryer! Sorry you’re having so much trouble.

I noticed the POWER button light doesn’t work on your washer, either. Besides, the dial squeaks when you turn it. Sounds to me like it’s more of a Best Buy problem than an LG problem. Who knows where that thing was or if it was even a new one. Mulitudes of people probably wailed on the dial, going “listen to the pretty music.”

Here in Austin, TX, you get a $100 refund from the county when you buy one of these washers because they are so efficient. They even generate there own electricity and are basically perpetual motion machines during the spin cycle once they are up to speed. You can actually grab the drum of the washer (while the machine is unplugged), spin it and the lights on the control panel will light up.

Hope everything worked out for you

By the way, I bought mine from a local appliance dealer here in Austin and paid $1,399 for the pair! The retail on the washer alone was $1,399. Miine are the non-steam models. Didn’t see a need for that.

Well I bought the blue top of the line steam machines and I agree they suck!! My washer since the first week has a mold smell ALL THE TIME. Getting service has been terrible, they came out and said it’s normal and have to use whirlout to get the smell out. That doesn’t work either. Now the solution is to basically clean the entire machine after every use. Have tried that and still smells. Just bought new kenmore elite and am dumping lg!!

Ditto to CW. I bought the LGWM2487 last year and have had the same problem with mold smell!! When I contacted the company I was told that I needed to clean the filter and drain the hose every two weeks! He said it in such a matter of fact manner that it was obvious this problem has come up on several other occasions. Did I miss something in home economics? Should you really have to drain the water hose every two weeks?

i too bought front loaders from lg around 3 years ago. i bought the 5 yr warrenty from best buy and i’m soooooo happy! they have been out to fix the draining mechanism for free. i also have that obnoxious smell coming from the washer. i used odor ban with the sani cycle and that only seems to mask the problem. when my washer is in use, my whole house has that smell. i have always left the door open to dry out and usually don’t leave clothes in there to mold. i have cleaned out the drain and that is not it!

I bought 2 sets of LG washer and dryer. First set ran perfect. Second set nightmare from day one. Dryer had the flat spots on rollers and sounded like a cement mixer. New rollers cured that after 50 plus phone calls. Washer LE codes 251 in the last year. Now the drum is loose on the motor/stator and the unit will not spin without trying to shake itself to death. The drum will move 3/4 of and inch on the motor assemble. The good news is the drum and motor are covered BUT the labor isn’t. $450.00 to install the new drum and motor/stator. The unit is 18 months old. I have had LE codes from day one. Call the local service centers. What a joke that is. Call LG so many time. The LG customer support gets paid to blow you off. There are no qualified techs to work on theses units. I have found out everything on the net or by tearing into the units myself. I have replace the rollers twice on my dryer and drive belt. The washer I have replace the shocks the springs and hall effect switch in the stator. LG will not give me the drum and motor to replace. So its send $450.00 or throw the unit in the big green dumpster. LG service sucks and there so called train support to service theses units. LG will never be in my future.

We bought the set and have been disappointed since. I use the washer at least every other day and have to use a kitchen baster to remove the water from the bleach dispenser for every load. Otherwise it runs down the front of the machine and all over the floor. Of course the customer service dept. has never experienced this problem before.
Another problem; did anyone out there know that you are suppose to open up the drain plug at least twice a month to keep the hose free from the excess dirty water. What a joke.
So much for trying to use less energy and help the environment. Please don’t be suckers like we were. I have two other friends that have bought the LG’s and they have similar complaints about their machines.

He has replace every part in the unit except the motor and it still doesn’ work. LG YOU SELL CRAP. Sam goes for your refrigerators.

Sorry that you didn’t have a great experience with your washer and dryer from LG. This is my experience! I have 3 comments that I would like to share. 1. We’re a family of 7 and we’re constatnly washing. WE are thrilled with our products and fed up with the Sears and maytags that we’ve spent at least $500 a year repairing about 3 or 4 times yearly. 2. Best Buy when installing couldn’t get my old washer hose off to install the new one, so I had to call a plumber. Didn’t matter that I paid them to install the washer. 3. The warranty that covers this LG product is GE, to my horror. I found this out when I received the warranty in the mail later. So customer service problems are really a GE issue. OH, and one more thing, I drive a 1976 Honda with over 200,000 miles on it (manuf. in Korea that has Calif. emissions qualified parts. Looks brand new and drives great with 30 mpg and rarely been in the shop.

So sorry for your bad experiences but thanks everyone, for taking the time to post. Based on what I am reading, I won’t go near an LG. Thanks for saving me tons of frustration.

I bought only Maytag appliances for years, up until about 6 years ago when I bought a Maytag Atlantis washer. It broke from day one and the repairman on his 6th repair call, told me the machine was a Magic Chef washer (pure junk) rebranded as Maytag. I haven’t purchased another Maytag since then.

I’ve been fixing the washer myself since the warranty ran out, but it finally gave up the ghost today. I was hoping LG would be a better option because I have one of their plasma TV’s that I’ve had zero problems with. Guess not….maybe they better stick to TV’s….

For what it’s worth, the Maytag repairman told me to buy Whirlpool only. Guess that’s my next stop.

Thanks again for sharing the issues with the washer…I would have been stuck with another problem.

Thanks for ALL of your comments..I guess that I will have to Pass on this one..Does anyone have any ideas about which one really is decent? I can tell people one thing that causes the smells..There is a plastic drum around the stainless drum & water doesn’t completely drain out of them. After a while it gets nasty. The only thing that I can think of to do is after you get done with your washing pour a little clorox into the washer. Just open the door & pour a small amount in & leave the door open. This is how I got rid of the smell in my old GE (that has bitten the dust). I am having a hard time picking out a new one, it appears that ALL of the new washers suck. They just cost too much money to go out & buy any ole one.

We got the LG front loader WM2016CW from Best Buy’s website about 5 months ago. Best Buy delivered and installed right on time (they got here 20 minutes early, in fact), they were SUPER courteous, and did everything they were supposed to. Afterwards, I decided to do some of my own fine tuning on the leveling to get rid of some slight vibration. We don’t have much of a vibration issue since the floor under the machine is ceramic tile, very sturdy.
We LOVE our machine! It’s way quieter than our old Whirlpool top loader, it gets the clothes very clean, it extracts so much water in the spin cycle that we’ve been able to shorten our drying time by 10-15 minutes per load, and our water bill has gone way down. No mold smell, the washer door is always wide open when not in use.
My only complaint is that the water intake valve on the machine opens and closes a lot since it takes in so little water at a time, and each time the valve opens and closes, it makes the pipes in my walls shake. I think this is an issue with my pipes, not the machine.
I would buy this machine again in an instant. I’m sure that lots of the other posters have genuine issues, but ours has been great, and most of the customer reviews that I had read on other sites for our model (consumer reports.org and others) were favorable.

I bought a LG WM0742HWA front load washer on Nov 26th, 2008 from PC Richardson. Used the machine once and it went totally dead. After numerous calls to PC Richardson (I bought the extended warranty) and LG, PC Richardson sent a guy (Dec 24th) to service the machine. He said a quick connect within the computed had come off and connected and left. Did one more load of washing and machine went totally dead again. Called LG and PC Richardson again. LG offered to send someone on Dec 30th. I found out this morning that was not true and there was no service scheduled by the company that was supposed to come to check. They do not work on Saturdays and will only come on their time. I will have to take a day off everytime they will come to service. They will not replace the machine unless I have 3 service calls with LG (PC Richardson’s service will not count). On top of that that the call volumes to LG are so high (he said 124 today) that they will call me back in an hour or so. I am wondering what other recourse do I have with these manufacuturer and dealer. I am frustrated beyond words. Appreciate any suggestion.

I got the LE error code on mine and it was nothing more than the pump filter being clogged. Try cleaning it before calling service. It’s kind of unfair to compare this machine with your 20 year old Kenmore or Matag that you never had a problem with. This is a percision machine that does require a litte maintenance to function at peak performance.

  51.  Katie   View all comments by Katie  +2  Add karma Subtract karma

Raji- I had the SAME problem. Literally at the same time as you. Hate to say it, but you will need a new machine. See if you can get a refund instead and buy a different brand, otherwise you will more than likely be faced with the problem again in the near future.

I really wish I would have looked here first before purchasing an LG. They aren’t any better on this side of the pond; I am on my third washer (wised up and bought a Whirlpool this time) in six months. Both times the motor burned up. I waited a week for the warranty guy to come both times, and the second time he told me he would have the parts in “two weeks” and he would call me back. Two and a half weeks later I called the dispatch center and they informed me the machine couldn’t be fixed and I would have to get a new one. I guess I should have gathered that when he said, “I’ll have the parts in two weeks.”

Bottom line, I thought that maybe it was just a glitch with the machine, but I now see they do just suck. Buy a Fridigaire, I have a set of those in my basement (they are 110v) and I never had any problems. No weird noises, I could wash my kid’s twin comforters no problem. I mean, unless you like hauling all your laundry to laundry mats, then buy an LG.

For all you guys complaining about BestBuy, try shopping and doing business with AAFES, then tell me you still think BestBuy sucks.

    Hi,
I looked at Consumer Reports and they said LG refrigerators were good. When I called them they said they didnt have a big enough sample size for one of the ratings I think it was the repair history?? But I called the local family owned appliance store. They won’t sell LG refrigerators because of so many problems with them. Always at least ask your local mom and pop appliance store before buying. They seem to tell the real truth. Sears guy never told me about any problems when I was browsing the LG fridge.
For those with no problems you are “LG” Lucky Guys! LG=Lucky Goldstar lol
Oh , I almost forgot. I went to the appliance parts store. Guy says don’t buy LG, it takes 3 weeks to get parts from S. Korea! You want to live 3 weeks without a fridge? Washer is one thing, fridge is another.

GE was what appliance store recommended. They all own them too. I remember GE in 2001 had a problem with the energy efficient fridge compressors. I think they learned from that problem and are better now.

I am never going to buy LG again. I bought a 47″ LCD tv (47LG50) I had the tv for about 3 months when it broke suddenly as I was watching it. The picture died completely, not even any menus or even volume display. I took it to a service center to get it fixed.

The service center tried to fix it but after 2-3 months they finally decided they couldn’t fix the tv. I was told that I was going to get a replacement. That was over about a month ago and I still have no idea when I’ll be able to pickup my new tv.

I’ve made 3 requests to speak to a manager ever time they say there isn’t one available. They promise a call back within 48 hours, the first 2 never came and I’m still waiting for the 3rd.

Basically LG customer service will just give you the run around, telling you they are waiting for another department to make a decision/do the paper work or what ever BS they see fit. My tv was working for about 3 months and it’s been over 4 months that it’s been broken and still no end in sight.

do not buy LG or SAMSUNG.
The new MAYTAG and WHIRLPOOL washers and dryers are the best ever!!
I would never buy anything else.
Maytag has a bad rep from an old machine called the Neptune. The neptunes are made by SAMSUNG. This is why MAYTAG is owned by WHIRLPOOL.

I agree!!! if you want a great long lasting machine then you need to go with Whirlpool/Maytag. Whirlpool has been making appliances for over 100 years…i think they know what they are doing!!! Also that is all that they do! You won’t find any phones or TV’s here!!! I will stick with what works!!!

VINCENT, I am with you on this one. These machines should be recalled or we need to obtain a class action law suit to get our money back to go buy what MIKE suggested, “American Made”
I have the same problem too. In 2007 I purchased the LG SteamFresh washer/dryer for the over $2500 at Fry’s Electronics in Sacramento, CA. I also purchased a 5 year warranty so I am hoping that I can have this one replaced. My washer started the same blinking on the dial today and that is what brought me to this website. My washer had all the blinking but would allow me to choose a cycle, I could even select temp, spin, and soil amount. It was that final step when I pressed the button to start the cycle, the entire panel began blinking out of control. That was my last load of wash, actually that load never did complete the wash cycle. Unplugging it did nothing. The manual contains a troubleshoot section but not for the control panel. I called for service and they said that it will be over a week before someone will come out. In the meantime I will have to use a paid service or something. Now after I read all these posts I don’t hold out any hope, I do not believe that my machine will be repaired but it better be replaced. I will try loosening the bolts like SCOTT did and see if I can fix it myself. Thank you to all who posted here regarding this matter because as you can read that it helped others out there shopping for an LG Washer to select something far different.
