Sounds like an exaggeration to me, android is alive and well. And even among stock devices there are gaps in updates. Need I even mention the Nexus S? And some stock devices don't even have that yet, like the G2x. Don't even get me started on tablets.

The real culprits are carriers as far as I can tell. The Sensation has ICS seemingly everywhere but the US all while running the same software as the Vivid/Velocity which now has it even in the US. Why would HTC wanna stagger the ICS release not only across devices which are almost identical internally, but across markets? It has to be the carriers, or maybe even the cellular hardware as Motorola is saying, not the skins or OEMs. Unless I'm missing something major.

Without the carriers buying into the OS etc., you will be on the same footing as the rest of the world where phones are usually sold without a plan, and still manage to do well.

All true, but without those UI tweaks and carrier BS, carriers wont buy into the OS and we will all be paying full price for devices with no insurance, limited services, and zero carrier support with zero carrier interest in expanding their offerings.

We will be back in the early 2000s... it was a good time, though. There wasnt this modern, rabid "fanboi-ism". Ahhh MoDaCo...

Manufacturer's hard coded UI's are what's destroying Android, not helping it. This (and carrier tweaks) prevent Google from pushing timely updates and security patches.

All they need to do is make a simple UI launcher app like many others in the market. This simplifies things so you don't have to spend six to twelve months reconfiguring you're overcomplicated configuration every time Google patches security holes.
