LG debuts razor-thin OLED 4K TVs

Today at LG's press conference, the company debuted their new "LG Signature" line of products. The company described these products as "creating a sense of exclusivity and uniqueness" for the user. The flagship product for this new line was their new OLED 4K TV.

The biggest news about the G6 and E6 series of OLED TV is just how remarkably thin they are. At 2.57mm thick, the new TVs are in a class of their own. They were described as being "picture-on-glass." However, just being thin isn't enough to make the new TV' struly stand out from the crowd. What really sets them apart is the beautiful picture they were able to display.

As soon as the TV on stage was revealed, it was easy to see just how black the blacks were on-screen. One of the main areas where LCD TVs struggle is in recreating true blacks. Thanks to the light bleed that you find on LCDs, it's nearly impossible to create dark black details, without having them look washed out.

Thanks to OLED's Pixel Dimming technology, each pixel is able to be controlled and dimmed separately. This is what allows the TV to show true blacks and crisp colors, without having a backlight washing them out.

Finally, with such a thin TV, it's hard to pack in good speakers. LG has partnered with harmon/kardon to provide a front-facing soundbar at the bottom of their latest OLED TVs. The hope is that this will create a better sound than downward-facing speakers that are found on other thin TVs.

LG didn't mention any pricing or availability for the new G6 and E6 series of OLED TVs. However, it's likely that this information will be made available over the next few days.
