LEDs could soon be used for WiFi

LEDs might not be used just for light in the near future. In fact, they could be used as WiFi "access points" if a group of researchers at Boston University have anything to say about it. The group is being funded by the US National Science Foundation with a $18.5 million grant and it could mean wireless connections for everyone.

LEDs use a very little amount of power and any remaining signal used by the LED could be used for wireless connections. We're talking up to 10 megabyte per second connections, here because it would be using visible light to send data.

Current power lines could be used for this tech and would be fairly simple to implement. I hope this happens sooner rather than later. We are in desperate need of stable Wi-Fi connections all across the country, not just in big cities.
