From what I've heard, there is a significant glare on the Kindle Fire in comparison to its predecessors, making it extremely hard to read in outdoor areas. Honestly, it seems more like a tablet with an additional reading function than an actual reader.

Kindle fire is a overpriced POS to counter the POS ipad. Eink, and other screen technology

without a sunlight readable color display that uses CHEAP technology
(transflective LCDs are EXTREMELY cheap to make), all of these tablets
are POS which cater to noob consumers ...great for business, bad for
smart people Where is the display? Where is the tablet with hdmi input? Where is the speed? This is a CRAP Product, Asus transformer, and every other tablet? CRAP.
If you do NOT buy CRAP, they will have to make good stuff. Until then, I use my reader from the library free.

My screen questions are unanswered. First, I refuse to buy two content consumption devices. If one can't handle my needs, I'll wait for one that can. (Maybe, I'll buy an e-ink Kindle while waiting for the magic all-in-one with the understanding that it's purely an interim kludge.)

The requirements and non-requirements are simple. Unneeded: bizarre viewing angle is irrelevant, beach viewing is irrelevant. What I need is: a device I can comfortably read for extended periods of time in a variety of indoor lighting conditions without eyestrain, a color screen for images, and probably the most important -- low price. Apps, 3G, toy features would be nice, but not needed. (Hence anything Apple is out.)

Modern web site designers are in love with grey-on-grey -- it makes my head ache after a few minutes, which is why I've never taken e-ink really seriously. It looks like grey-on-grey in most images I've seen and when I've looked over peoples' shoulders on the bus. On the other hand, backlit color displays are very hard to read for more than a few minutes without eyestrain. Maybe I'll never find a device that can replace a book.

I hope my local Best Buy gets one of each of these things in November and will let me compare them for about half an hour with the actual displays -- not, as usual, with some glued-on picture of a display.

Key question: Is there glare on the screen, or does it look like the old school Kindles? Is the contrast like the old Kindle--low--or is it VERY black on VERY white? For me, the main reason to have a Kindle is the reading display that's easy on my eyes and easy to read if you have visual processing issues and need low glare and low contrast.
