If we go by what normal hardware would cost with the profit margin needed to profit from just the hardware sale then it’s closer to over $300 for the Kindle Fire. Both Amazon and B&N make profit from e-book sales. So they can both offer more without requiring all profit come from just the hardware sale.

Actual hardware costs for the Kindle Fire appear very close to the sale price. Since they stripped it to pretty bare basic minimum aside from the good screen and processor. So they may or may not be losing anything on hardware costs. They just depend heavily on profits from services and ads for net profit.

B&N is likely doing similar but can’t lower pricing as much as Amazon given they have less services to offer for alternate revenue and so have to make at least some profit on the hardware.

It’ll just be hard for others to compete and offer the same premium parts like the IPS screen and dual core processors. Since others in the price range are still single core and usually offer lower quality screens.

For me CM7 isnt a huge win. Im a reader, and the native reader software is fantastic. The nook reader app isnt the same at all. I use manualnooter and the only thing it lacks is the OC kernel. The nook color was a total win for me as an ereader and a totally awesome surprise as a tablet and the new one can only be better. Ive had mine for a year and unlike every other system i got each update they put out makes it better.

People buying the fire are not targeting the fire for the most part. They are buying into the services. Its almost like saying you selected cable company A over company B because of the cable box. Nobody cares about the box all that much. They care more about what channels they are getting. I suspect that is what is driving all the sales of fire.

Yes this was a great move by Barnes and Noble to announce this before the Kindle arrives. Amazon could have sold millions by now and no one would have cared about the competition.

Apps …. ipad specific tablet apps. There are many and it makes a big difference over an ipod touch. Although an ipod XL or an ipad mini would both probably run ipad apps. Either way I would be interested!

Yeah let’s be glad that you’re not running Apple.

And the “10 inches is too large for people over 45″ line is hilarious. Really killing it. Especially when you consider that people 45 and up are over 50% of the tablet market, and the largest demographic if you include everyone 45+.

But yes, Apple’s absolute market dominance, as driven by 45 year olds and over, is clearly off base because their best demographic, according to you, is too old for a 10″ screen.

B&N would really have a hit on their hands if they emphasised the screen. A tablet is only marginally useful if you can’t take it outside. B&N mentions anti-glare and no air gaps for the Nook Tablet screen on their website. For $50 more that’s a no brainer, just a question of whether you want to save $50 and get the Kobo Vox instead.

Gentlemen, start your engines!. These 2 tablets are going to change the tablet market in price and form-factor. I think both will do very well and will be closely watched by Apple. They have one size and that is 9.7 inch screen which is too big for people under 45. Now that Steve is not around, no one can stop Apple doing a 7 inch iPad with a serious high-resolution screen, 2 nice cameras, garageband and iMovie and 64GB flash and they can stick to $600.
But Apple should do a 7inch iPad2.5 for $299.

People should note that the fire is also $249 with $49 loss paid for through advertising.. I’m betting their cloud browser injects ads where there were none before..

Too bad amazon didn’t have units for sale when they announced.. people would be stuck.
