Kendrick Lamar's new album breaks Spotify record

Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly album has set a new Spotify record, the streaming service announced yesterday. According to the music streaming service, it set "a new global record for the most streams in a single day worldwide." Such was achieved by being streamed in excess of 9.6 million times on the first day the album was made available. If it keeps up this pace, it could break the weekly streaming record set by Drake back in February.

In February, Drake broke Spotify's record when it came to the number of album streams in its first week of availability — there were 17.3 million in three days, according to the LA Times. Lamar's album has neared that number, and could exceed it in the next couple of days.

This serves to further demonstrate how many people are turning to music streaming services for their music fix, something that has become a more attractive option than buying downloads. Spotify has remained one of the most popular music streaming services, though Pandora is still the king, according to a recent study.

As we reported back in January, Spotify grew during 2014, seeing both its active listener numbers and its subscriber numbers increase, the latter of which hit 15 million by the start of 2015. By the time January 1 rolled around, Spotify also boasted 60 million or so active users. The service wasn't without its controversy, however, which included among other things Taylor Swift pulling her content.
