OnLive is already doing this, in fact they even have a "console".. sort of. Also, there are many places in the u.s. still where broadband is nonexistant or hardly affordable. IMHO it would be cheaper for companies to start expanding LTE or another wireless internet protocol, then not every single house and business would need a line buried to their home, of course to do that, the companies that run LTE will have to get away from insane 2-4G caps.

This article is missing half a sentence somewhere;

"While I’m sure that most technology journalists covering the gaming beat have downloaded plenty of games and movies to their consoles,"

I need closure! Where's the rest of this sentence?

This will be very simple. every game gets a pc version and a ps3 version. I will just have to drop the playstation and get games for the pc instead. Did sony execs realize the entire world does not have fast reliable internet. I live in a rich country where the internet is a nightmare. It does not have to be disks but it does have to be a physical media. I dont want to start playing in one weeks time after a 4gb download finished succesfully, I want to play in one minute. Is there a quick download version of MW3 or TD2Unlimited?? I doubt it

No disc drive does not mean download only.
With advances in flash drive technology we could witness the rebirth of the game cartridge.

that is purely a guess on my part, but when you can make affordable flash drives the size of your thumbnail that can hold 50+ gigs, why not?

Optical drives are too slow. Disc are also still too big (i expected all optical media to be mini disk/umd sized by now) and frail. I really never thought that by this generation of consoles we would still have loading beyond 3 seconds. On that aspect, I praise Nintendo for low loading times (despite being optical) and for DS ROM storage. The Vita is on the right track with priority for downloadable content and flash(ROM) cards for those without broadband (although a new proprietary format was a bad move). I believe that's the future. Flash cards are getting cheaper and bigger (2TB SDXC > 100GB 3xBD), so it makes sense to make it a standard.

Great article, I agree 100%.
My friends and I are always letting each other borrow games, test them out and then go pick up our own copy so for hard core gamers physical disks need to stay. Sure movies and music we've moved pass the "need" for physical disk but I prefer blu-ray disk because they give me more media for my money and lately have come with a digital copy. iTunes (or any other online market) often charge the same price and you get less.
I hope Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo don't mess up and drop physical games.
