You're totally wrong, dude. Nintendo has not said that the Wii U is twice as powerful as the PS3 and they HAVE actually given out some low-detail tech specs in the past. Apparently it has a 4000 series AMD GPU, considering heat output and energy efficiency there's no way it'd be anything higher than a 4770 or a 4830, I actually expect it to be somewhere in the middle of those two in performance since it's a custom 4000 series card.

They've also already told us of the processor, an IBM quad-core. They've already gone on record and said that the Cell processor is waaay faster(it's pretty much alien technology that Sony found and repurposed) than the Wii U's IBM "Watson" processor.

So the Wii U's GPU is more powerful than the PS3's and it'll definitely end up with more RAM, but its processor is weaker. Not exactly a massive bump up in performance, pretty disappointing if you ask me(a Nintendo fan, outside of the crappy 3DS).

Sony didn't go on record and say the PS4 will only be a little more powerful than the PS3, they actually said that it's gonna have to be leagues more powerful or otherwise they shouldn't even release it yet. Also, looking at leaked documents and statements it's almost 100% certain that the PS4 will have a 6000 series GPU in it, all the leaks actually lean toward an APU with an integrated 6770 along with a different 6770, dual-GPU. They'd also have to make it have at least six good processing cores to be better than the Cell processor, though I'd expect an eight-core setup instead. The 6000 series of GPUs are way more energy efficient and cool than the 4000 series of GPUs and they're a lot more powerful; it's pretty much gonna be a redo of the 3DS, with the 3DS only being a slight bump above the PSP and the Vita being an amazing piece of kit. The 3DS' CPU and GPU combo are weak and energy inefficient, meaning the 3DS' battery life will always suck, even with the 3DS XL's larger hull mostly being filled with a larger battery its life is worse than the Vita's and the DS before it. Nintendo doesn't care about performance and energy efficiency as much as price, hopefully they'll learn their lesson after the 3DS.

At the end of the day, the Wii U will be grossly outdated by 2015 but it'll still be a success because it's a Nintendo system and Nintendo fanboys are the most cultish and out-there fanboys of them all... except Apple fanboys. *Shudder*

Actually Andrew House the head at Sony said that they wouldn't be releasing a next gen console if there isn't a 'significant leap in the experience'... So I think there are still some years left in the old PS3, ok maybe not the 10 they planned but at least another year or 2...

I disagree about the Gamecube comment. They aren't in a rush to release a new one cause I think they kinda future-proofed it with the Bluray player. See the HD-DVD vs Bluray war.... Microsoft need to make up for their loss of investment, which I think they have with Xbox Live. I think the 720 will come out first and a year or 2 later the PS4. By then the cost of the hardware will have come down and hopefully Sony can start to make a profit from the start. Im not trying to say 1 is better than the other, people need to realise at the end of the day FAIR competition is good for consumers! We all win! I hope! But I do love my PS :)

But Sony is also in a very different financial situation than at the PS3 launch. Say they made a console that cost them $450 to make, research/develop, market, and ship, and they receive $400 for each sold, if they sell 6 million units year one, that is a $300 million dollar loss on hardware sales. They can't afford to do that when they could cull back the specs a little and sell the console at a profit, or at least break even.

Also keep in mind Sony said the PS3 would be a 10 year console. That didn't happen

Expect the PS4 to be the Gamecube of next generation. Middle of the road in power compared to the other 2, but closer to the higher end.

The PS3 and the Wii are in completely different ball parks! Fair enough it was Expensive at the time of release, but you have to take into account that it had a Bluray player in it which at the time standalone were up in the high hundreds even thousands.. Yeah they are in financial turmoil but its not cause of the PS3, its because its board are a bunch of dicks thinking that past glories were enough to justify the insane prices of their other products!!
Given the planned 10 year lifespan of the system I would think it the saviour for Sony. At launch the Xbox and Sony were pretty much on par in the 500-600 range. Thats not gonna change for the 720 and PS4! For the latest and greatest console people will go crazy for it! For the PS4 i'll even go Apple-on-it....Camp out the night before!

In that way the general comparison to Apple holds up some. If Apple releases a new product that doesn't save the world, people are mildly disappointed. The originally iPod's reception on slashdot comes immediately to mind.

Nintendo's got a fair history now of choosing to hack out its own path by going with unconventional interfaces rather than raw power. At times that's worked, at times the company has stumbled, but from a reporter's perspective it's at least *interesting.* Can they get 3rd party developer buy-in when porting stuff is a question mark due to the second screen controller? And so on. You might as well actually report on this stuff in a way that'd be more interesting that this horse race approach....

The biggest flaw in the Wii U is the physical media slot in a 2012 device. This shows complete ignorance and denial of the inevitable cloud gaming revolution, so well implemented by OnLive, and potentially, any app capability upgrade for Apple TV that may or may not be announced tomorrow at WWDC or later in the year.

Any peripheral manufacturer (Belkin, Logitech etc) can produce high quality controllers like those introduced by Nintendo that would interface with the aforementioned cloud gaming systems (cloud App delivery in the case of Apple TV, not streamed gaming) - so therefore obsoleting the Wii before it even gains momentum.
Nintendo hardware is superb, with excellent build quality and ergonomics, but one gets the feeling they live in a different Universe and think that said Universe will remain stable forever.
Not so.

Smartglass will not very little impact as far 3rd party support. Who is going to invest money in making gaming software for the xbox that works along side a tablet when not enough people own tablets/people who are willing to game with their tablet & xbox, to justify the cost of creating games for xbox/smartglass. It is a pipe dream. Its the same type of trouble the xbox 360 had when it debut in 2005. There were only 12% of American households that owned HDTV, yet the xbox offered expensive High Def tech that no one could afford or use. That move is why year after year it lost money on every console they sold. The Wii U is different. Its tablet is already bundled with its gaming system and software will designed around it. Sony Vita and Smartglass are both after-thoughts.

Another article from Don in which Nintendo is a dead man running and Apple is the future, what a surprise.

iPad and iPhone gaming will never hold a torch to a full blown console game. Period. As great as mobile (phone based) gaming is, it's not unreasonable for people to still have a DS or other portable unit for TRUE mobile gaming.

Don, the saddest part about all your article is how you make such grand statements only to come back a few months later and contradict yourself. When the Wii U comes out and is wildly successful, you'll write some silly fluff piece about how Nintendo is such a brilliant part of the gaming world blah blah blah, completely looking past how often you slam them.

NIntendo will always have a prominent place in the gaming world and Apple is pissing people off with their silly lawsuits faster than ever before. Seriously, Don, get with it.

And how exactly does smart glass make you think that it's automatically going to triumph over the GamePad?

What about the people who don't have a tablet or smartphone?

I have an iPad and iPhone, and yes i'll probably end up playing with smart glass. But to take it out every time I play a game - just to check the specks of a weapon? (that was one of their examples)

Unless a game requires it (Which i doubt, since you have to have your own tablet or smartphone for it to work), I think it'll get old after a while as far as games go. And eventually the hype for it will probably thin out.

The Wii U's gamepad is part of the controller for the console, so it's always ready, and always in front of you.

this site wanted specs so they can go ooohhh ahhh like watching a fireworks display then to turn around and go well sony and microsoft will put out this and that and blow away nintendo like they did this gen. but the sad part is NONE of these "tech" guys really knows what these next gen systems will have. all we can go by is what the companies say and so far nintendo hasnt "revealed" any specs. just that it is twice as powerful as the ps3. even sony as i said earlier went on record saying the ps4 is only gonna be slightly more powerful then the ps3 meaning on par with the wii U. the next gen graphics wont matter cause all three are gonna be displaying in the same resolution and whats gonna set them apart is controls and "extras" they can give the consumer.

lets see to display a 4k resolution you need a 4k tv and they dont make those. blue ray has wayyy too much space and only 10% of the disc is used. if teh wii U is a 2005 system then that makes the ps3 a 2000 system. even at 720 native resolution it still blew away the ps3 graphics. sony themselves said that the ps4 will only be slightly more powerful then the ps3 is cause of the fact that tv's cant do more then 1080. and people are not goign to just jump up in resolution once a year to satisfy gaming. nintendo had the best business model make tons of money then do the leap to HD when its a logical move to make.

i know a bunch of people that own a ps3 and 360 and all they use it for is netflix and movies.... the wii we hve gets played when the kids are not fighting cause one is losing over another. sorry but the wii is still the better of the three systems for actually playing games. the other two are more entertainment add ons for your already existing entertainment pieces. which is why not many have bought them and you say they have sold alot but you do realize the 360 you have to cut sales in half cause of RROD and the ps3 also cause they had massive overheating problems themselves. the wii si the only console that doesnt break and hasnt had to double its sales by broken systems unlike ps2 who took advantage of broken ps2's and people had to buy 2-3 more to replace the ones that break easily. no one even thinks of these things.
