Blame it on the system not on Apple. If Apple doesn’t register these patents that are present in every single one of their products at a core level somebody else would have and Apple would be screwed. Its not that hard to get around these patents, that is why in most cases Apple’s patents have no credibility because slight changes can void the whole patent.

If Apple owns the patent of “slide to unlock” why the competition would even copy the exact same concept on every single device? Their rivals want to bring the iPad/Phone experience to the market with their own alternatives, Apple has the right to protect what they carefully planned for their product line. Apple does borrow, all companies borrow in some way. Once you own a patent, its yours and shouldnt be infringed. Now suing with FRAND patents is another issue.

Do you love your boring, 4 year old GUI interface as well? Apple’s feeling a little threatened that their competitors are actually evolving mobile interface design past 2007….hence why we see these lawsuits.

It’s really easy for Apple to defend IP, when their patents are so broad and vague that they shouldn’t have been granted in the first case. All they’ve done is undesign their products to the absolutely basic level in terms of optimum appeal to usability…….applying standards that they didn’t develop, that they didn’t research….and then patenting their *product* that applies those standards….such that nobody else can make products that follow those standards (again, that Apple didn’t invent in the first place).

Apple borrows ruthlessly from good ideas that it sees….and, if possible, then patents those processes. Slide to unlock, anyone? :)

A little OT, but if you think trying to patent shapes is bad, what about companies patenting things like breast cancer, corn, soybeans, parts of the human body. We definitely need some patent office reform.

No, believe it or not, I was not joking about not being fully knowledgeable about the design history and influences of smartphones and tablets, and my questions about this topic really were sincere. Isn’t that crazy?And I couldn’t much help it, I had to get this off my chest: I feel… gross, reading discussions where people are actually insulting one another or becoming heated over computers or other brand items (no matter what the side). More so when participating in them. People have different tastes in things, and different needs and preferences for how they get that stuff done. Hardly seems a big deal. Have fun if you think it is.

what smart phones were around that were like the iPhone? LG Prada and their capacitive touch screen, the same capacitive touch screen apple borrowed for their iPhone and the Samsung, F700. those phones were “like” the iPhone and were released before the iPhone.

Samsung released their tablet in 2006, 4 years before the iPad

“App Stores” have been around since the 90′s, I was purchasing mobile apps for my Windows CE device back in 1999. Palm users since the mid 90′s

I said one idea that was ORIGINAL. taking all these existing ideas and putting them into one package is NOT original. and you say “sleek small device” that’s what you call innovation? My Compaq iPaq was by far the thinnest, most sleek multimedia device of its time. and it DID ALL THOSE things you give apple credit for being the first to do. it played multimedia files, it did email, web sites, IM, calendar, notes, phone calls, sync data etc etc. all on a beautiful full color touch screen display. I also purchased and installed 3rd part apps from “app stores” sometimes Microsoft’s own “app store” or from sites like pocket gear and Handandgo. you said apple was the first to start the smart phone competition, how can they be the first to do this when Nokia, Ericsson and others were doing this a full 10 years before there ever was an iPhone?I seriously don’t understand your logic and people like you, I don’t know if this is due to your age (being so young you were not using such devices in the 90′s) or sheer ignorance. Apple excels at re-inventing, they don’t invent anything. even the iconic designs of their products are just copies of Braun products of the 60′s !!my god man, please do a Google search. apple invents nothing, they copy everything and rebrand it as their own and legions of people too young or too ignorant worship a brand.

Funny thing is, your wrong. I am by no means a apple fan boy (im about to ditch my iphone for an android) but the fact is, that apple was the first to take all those things you listed and put them in one sleek small device and they did it right. Its take 3 years for Android to become as well recognized, fluid and usable as iOS. Truth is, Apple was the first to start the smartphone competition. Android has though, as of late, incorporated both hardware and software innovations that I feel place it slightly above iOS for the moment. But at the same time you can’t deny the part that Apple has had in all of it, just because you don’t like the company.

Honest question. I’m not meaning to perpetuate any uncomfortable Internet arguments. I’m just wondering what smart phones were are around that were at all like the iPhone before that iPhone was announced and unveiled, or what tablets were around that we’re at all like the iPad before that was announced. Or… What mobile operating system was around that was at all like iOS and its app store and all else before that gradually came out.

It seems like almost all of what we see in this mobile trend was first introduced or made vastly popular by Apple first. Of course they’ve taken and adjusted some ideas themselves and will continue to do so. But would things really be at all the same if they had not introduced the iPhone and iPad to the market first?

Windows phone, android, and blackberry all violate this patent. Patent expiration dates are too long for the speed of computer innovation. So how can you say that MS has been innovative if they implement this same thing.

Clean? are you a complete idiot? Apple, the company that wants patents on rounded corners, the rectangle, flat surfaces? The same company that in a recent court case with Samsung claimed in writing that the competitions tablets should have to be made with a thick casing, a cluttered appearance, with out a black bezel or no bezel at all and with substantial adorment on it’s edges? The same company who’s so called patents are clearly ment to prevent realistic competition and provide for themselves a monopoly? Thats ‘clean’ in your little world? Theres a good reason why everytime Apple sues someone 90% of their so called patents get tossed into the garbage heap. As far as the patent left standing both Samsung and HTC have been given plenty of time to work around or buy themselves out of it. Companys step on each others patents all the time and Apple is amongst the worst offenders, just ask Nokia.

They actually claimed ownership of a number of things and FAILED badly.

One attempt claimed the shape of the iPhone device was unique to Apple and that nobody could use the shape.

Anyone remember geometry glass – clearly NOT Apple.
