(my father was at Sycamore Canyon for the Vanguard and Atlas series launches and then Canaveral, when our focus was a permanent moon base and beyond ).  But Pentagon decided that they could look back down on the Commies a lot easier from a near earth orbit than from the moon where we would be focused on looking outward. So they squeezed NASA&#039;s head and the elected boobs on the Sci Tech Committee (Senate) and convinced them that if they wanted their budget &quot;In the interest of National Security&quot; They&#039;d stop playing around with exploring space and do something useful like giving them a platform to stare back at earth from.
