Payback for letting “Fort Fumble” have their way years ago. (my father was at Sycamore Canyon for the Vanguard and Atlas series launches and then Canaveral, when our focus was a permanent moon base and beyond ). But Pentagon decided that they could look back down on the Commies a lot easier from a near earth orbit than from the moon where we would be focused on looking outward. So they squeezed NASA’s head and the elected boobs on the Sci Tech Committee (Senate) and convinced them that if they wanted their budget “In the interest of National Security” They’d stop playing around with exploring space and do something useful like giving them a platform to stare back at earth from.
