HP and webOS definitely have a great opportunity at taking a sizeable chunk of the smartphone business. I've never used or even seen a webOS device in the flesh, yet I'm planning to buy a Pre 3 when it's availalable, and even a TouchPad if I can afford it.

webOS has been voted best mobile OS by Laptop magazine readers and I think the only thing that has held it back was hardware and lack of funding.

Now with HP owning Palm and hardware that finally matches the OS, webOS should shine. If HP manage to integrate it into pc's too, then it will actually become quite dominant worldwide.

I'm really hoping that all these competing products think that they will be able to garner enough of the market to validate having their own apps and apis. Apple pulled it off because they were the first to the party and they had no choice. Android is still struggling to meet the iOS app stores offerings. RIM has now released that the Playbook will run Android apps. I think that HP would be smart to work this into their business model.

Applications are the selling point. People ask, "can I use Evernote and Dropbox (or insert app name here)?" If the answer is no, then forget it. I really don't think the average consumer cares about the OS so long as it allows him or her to do the things they want.

If HP has a kick ass OS, then by all means bring it to market, but if they're gonna limit it by using only their own APIs, it's not gonna work. It would be nice to see everything develop around a FOSS API model (Android Apps [although I don't know if the API is FOSS]). Is interoperability too much to ask?

A market expanding doesn't necessarily mean there is room for another hardware-os combination. All we have to do is look back at Windows adoption to see why. The hardware manufacturers dictate what OS will dominate and the only way a OS can dominate an entire market is if it's licensed to multiple hardware manufacturers, and there only ones doing that are Android and WP7, and WP7 doesn't seem to be catching on against a FOSS Android OS. Therefore, developers follow platform growth.

If HP really wants webOS to succeed I believe they will need to license it to other hardware manufacturers--sorry, two phones & one table aren't going to cut it. People like choice in the hardware they purchase and that only comes when the OS is widely licensed and the hardware companies are the ones advertising the products to the end users. . . . As Bill Gates told Apple years ago, please license your OS it will dominate the market in no time, but Apple didn't and where is the Mac OS now? ~5%. Because Bill Gates understood that the OS must be free from the hardware company and licensed to all.

What makes ios and android so successful are all the apps available on those platforms. I can't imagine many developers creating an app for ios, android,wp7, blackberry, meego, and webos. This is just too much. Just imagine this in the pc world, so many different os along with different versions of the same os would really suck for the consumers
