Actually, I think the real game changer for Microsoft isn't implementing Skype (cause i don't know if Skype is average consumer friendly); I think it lies within one of their other products- Kinect. If they can implement swiping, pinch-to-zoom, and other motions without having to touch your touchscreen by using Kinect in a Windows Phone, then i think it's just "gimmicky" enough to catch the eye of the young and old "average consumer". That would truly be taking it to the next level, and since Kinect is proprietary, they would have a jump on Apple and Android.

True, but Sprint's CDMA network would present issues when viewed in context with the prevalent GSM networks internationally. Part of Microsoft's goal with the Nokia partnership was to extend Windows Phone to lower-cost price points, something Nokia is good at doing with its economies of scale and existing footprint in developing markets. Those markets invariably use GSM networks, though.

Yes, Microsoft could push for dual CDMA/GSM chipsets, but that's an added cost when the goal is making WP affordable.

I'm thinking Skype didn't make a Windows Phone app both because it's difficult (multitasking issues) and there weren't enough customers to matter. For people who consider a voip app a hygiene feature, yeah, it makes sense to add it and integrate it to the phone.

But what that does to billable minutes for the carrier... it kills them. And that's huge money. This isn't going to make the carriers more eager to push the phone - and they were already reluctant.

Anybody who cares already has a different app to do this anyway.

If you could get a SkypePhone (Microsoft really ought to ditch the 1990s "Windows" brand) for $19.99 or even $25.99/month data only with say, free Skype to US/Canada (matching Google Voice) I think it would make a huge difference. I'm an Android user, positively swear by it. But I would definitely sit up and take notice and reconsider my options if Microsoft did that.

Chris, think a little bigger. A MS play for Sprint would be a game changer. Of course, I'm not taking about a partnership but an outright purchase of Sprint and its Virgin Mobile USA prepaid brand. As long as Verizon continues to so blatantly eschew WP for Android, MS will have to think extremely strategic. This will become more pronounced if W8 does not provide a notable bump for WP8 within six months of their release.

I'm not really seeing how Skype is a WP7 wildcard. It still doesn't help out the ugly interface that nobody wants (sorry, it had to be said). While I see that the number of WP7 articles have skyrocketed (looks like Microsoft's checks went out to bloggers to write about their platform as they promised), I fail to see changing opinions when it comes to the first thing someone sees: the interface. As long as people can use Skype with video on other platforms, its not going to be some magical trump card. VOIP does use data and data isn't unlimited anymore folks.

Interesting story Chris. The only question in my mind is - will Microsoft use Skype to help sell Nokia phones (to start)? It seems MSFT has more to gain by selling Lumia 900s (and Lumia 710s) than it does a Samsung or HTC device at the current time given Nokia's dedication to the platform. MSFT can make inroads with consumers using the Lumia 900, force other OEMs to up their game when it comes to hardware and then spreading the Skype love with the next gen of WP devices from those manufacturers.
