What about N64? It looked pretty much like they were aiming to compete against Playstation in ’96. Apparently they had another positioning back than. But yeah, they have changed that after N64, and concentrated in releasing a much more “family-console”.

nintendo sold to the fat kids cause their parents wanted them to exercise. xbox sold because they were so highly priced in the beginning. the original xbox360 didnt have wifi like the wii & ps3. to play online on the xbox 360, you have to pay a fee for the xbox live while it’s free on the wii & ps3. now go suck on Bill Gates some more.

Don’t even compare Nintendo to Xbox and PS. Because Nintendo has never had similar hardware in its consoles. They aim for a completely different market, where people think its just FUN to play games rather than playing games that are fun but with an incredible graphical experience. I love Nintendo and have always had their previous consoles, I will most likely get their new one too- despite the lack of power. Because if I want the power, I get the playstation or xbox. I always have two of them, Nintentdo and playstation or the Xbox.

I’d love to see the ownership figures rather than sales. I know I personally have bought (at retail not second hand) 3 Xbox 360′s thanks to the RROD and 2 PS3′s thanks to the YLOD. I’m willing to bet I’m not the only one that’s contributed to the sales figure more than once.

Actually, I think he sounded like a PS3 fanboy. Where he said “Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is by means superior to the PlayStation 3 nowadays” I think he meant “by NO means superior”. He also said the Xbox sold better because people bought and Xbox and didn’t give the PS3 a chance.

For those who need help with the math:

Original Playstation 3 60GB Retail Price: $600

Original Xbox 360 20GB (the “premium model lol) Retail Price: $400
Plus the Cost of playing online for 7-8 years: $350-$400
Actual cost of owning an Xbox if you want to play online: $750-$800

Like I said, you can keep the play-to-play model.

Lotta Xbox fanboys on here that’s for sure. You can keep your Halo and your pay-to-play online experience, I’ll take the free play anytime.

And for those complaining about PS being overpriced…think about the additional costs Xbox users have incurred over the years…if you bought your Xbox in 2005, and an average xbox live subscription is $50 a year (give or take), congratulations you’ve paid an additional $350 that PlayStation owners haven’t. Now who is overpriced? It’s kinda ironic since most people claim Xbox is better for the online experience.

Only thing the xbox has over the ps is better online… I buy games for a good detailed story and splitscreen/shared screen coop is fine with me idc bout online…so that being said i prefer ps as it has blu ray and more and better exclusives and imo a better controller.

Those are some fair things to consider, however the next generation won’t have quite the same dynamic as the last. Microsoft burned a lot of people with hardware that died quickly and repeatedly. How many people do you know that bought 2, 3, 5 XBox 360s and now say “Never again, Microsoft”…? I think everyone knows at least a few. Most of the ones I know bought a PS3 and never looked back.

This is awfully biased, I’ve lost a lot of faith in Sony and Nintendo lately, but I’m fairly certain the PS4 will be launching around the same time as the 720. EA’s head honcho said they already exist, and I’ve learned that most Internet rumors can actually hold true, considering everything that leaked about the Wii U has been spot on.

To put things into perspective: the Wii U is 20x faster/more powerful than the Wii, like the PS3 is 20x the PS2, so that would make the Wii U about 2-3x more powerful than the PS3 and 4x more powerful than the 360. Which would make sense. The 720 is 6x more powerful than the 360, but is upgradeable supposedly, whereas the PS4 will be 10x the PS3, having to support 4k resolution, theres no doubt the PS4 will once again be on top in terms of hardware. Thats what im thinking anyways.

The fact that the new xbox and playstation will more than likely be around the same prices the older systems were when they launched, I don’t think the Wii U offers anything more than what my ps3/360 does, so I’ll wait.

I see no mention of the fact that most recent rumors actually put the next X-Box launching in 2014 due to the catastrophic failure rate of the Oban chip being used.

Last report I read was looking at over 90% failure rate with Oban out of the manufacturer. If it is that unstable, imagine the lifespan of the consoles with the “working” versions.

If Microsoft foolishly launches in 2013, they will likely have another RRoD situation.

It doesn’t matter if Wii U has the “graphical” CPU and GPU that more expensive consoles (and PCs) are gonna have, if it gets the market share lead and races away with it 3rd parties will be forced to design their games with the Wii U’s graphics as standard.

By the way I own both consoles but hands down even though it is pay per play for xbox it is worthy and superior infrastructure than psn

I was completely happy with the blu ray drive that came with the PS3 the day it came out, as I am now with that same machine I didn’t feel ‘trapped’ into that then new technology as some said they were doing, I welcomed that new technology, that was the whole point for me, to be buying something new! And I’m glad I didn’t buy a few hundred dollar add on to play HD-DVDs which died, or have to swap my discs in games because its too big to fit on a DVD, the days of disc swapping in games should be over by now. And as for competitive prices, the PS3 originally sold for less than it cost to produce, so for the new tech and hardware it was, it was competitively priced, and therefore still relevant hardware today also.

Dude I’m not an America hater by any means, in fact my grandfather was born there, but you do realize that Xbox pretty much only significantly outsells Playstation in USA dont you? And you make it sound like Xbox is made just with Americans in mind, why would the rest of the world care about that or want a console only made with one country in mind? If you look at the stats for the PS3 sales and Xbox, even with the Xboxs 1 year head start release on sony, the PS3 is only trailing by 3 million units, thats hardly a landslide victory in the sales department mate. And plenty of people are happy with Sony’s services, your king of DOH comment in relation to them is, just, well, completely wrong in my opinion.

For me and this applies to me only. The 2011 PS3 hack which took Sony nearly a month to restore the network — along with Activision’s preference for XBox and other 3rd party developers preference, kind of left me with no other choice but to go over to Xbox. Maybe someday these things won’t be as important to me and I’ll go back to PS3. However, if Sony wants to compete with MS (which I am not sure they do) then releasing the PS4 sooner than later will definately help.

Sure Sony is on a 10 year cycle, but they’d be dumb to not introduce the next console prior to the end of the 10 year cycle for PS3. The PS3 was launched 6 years after the PS2 launched. They missed 6 years after the PS3 for the next console, but I can certainly see it coming out much sooner than 2015-16.

lol I used to be a fanboy too Ayais… But then I did RESEARCH. I LOVE Sony’s electronics, but I HATE sony as a company. Haven’t you noticed over the years that they are always a step behind microsoft? Microsoft is an American company with AMERICAN NEEDS in mind. THAT is why Xbox will ALWAYS outsell Sony. Sony has NEVER known what to do in America to produce sales. For instance, Think how much more money they could have made with ONE more game??? FINAL FANTASY 7… EVERYONE was hyped for a remake, but what did sony do? They bring out a TECH DEMO to tease everyone, then they lose FF13 exclusivity…wow… just wow… instead of bringing out one of the most anticipated remakes ever, they stop giving Square-enix money, and lose the ENTIRE FRANCHISE EXCLUSIVITY TO F(&%^NG XBOX!! Sony is the king of DOH! I will always love them as an electronics maker, but I would NEVER do business with them. Dumb mistakes are their forte.

I count myself among the 63.9 million PS3 owners, rather sadly, in fact. Mine has been a dust collector from day one, and if I didn’t use it for Netflix, I don’t think I’d have bothered to hold onto it at all.

Would love to see the games division profit breakdown my MS vs. Sony, though. Also the games sold per machine.

Those worldwide sales numbers, by the way? Or USA?

Xbox 360 released in 2005. 67.2 million sales = 9.6 million per year.

PS3 released in 2006. 63.9 million sales = 10.65 million per year.

That doesn’t seem so bad to me.

Intrigued by title, but turns out to be no more than someone’s vague musings. I’m sorry but saying next gen consoles will probably come out some time next year is not news, nor is it article worthy. Was hoping for some new info, some inside hints, anything really other than just guesses that anyone who’s vaguely up to speed with gaming tech could come up with. Give me news dammit!

Sony’s on a ten year life cycle with it’s consoles. A PS4 probably won’t show up until 2015-2016.

And actually Microsoft just said this year that there will not be a new console for a while, that they and game developers are fine with current hardware.

And besides that, when you think about Microsoft wanting to do away with Optical drives all together and go to a strictly download and play medium, they need more time to make that happen.

Short-term thinking. The lifespan of a console is 7-10 years. So Sony will be behind for 1 year? Ok, no problem. They will release their console a year later with technology 1 year more advanced and taking into account feedback about the competition, and retain the technology edge for 5-9 years. This seems like ideal timing to me.

No, no, no. PS3 was overpriced, that was the only reason it hasn’t sold as well. And the xbox’s various software glitches and hardware failures haven’t improved MS’s brand. If the ps4 is affordable, it will go back to being the best-selling console worldwide, esp. if MS leaves bluray out. Oh, I’m no bluray fan (and I have an xbox), but worldwide it’s obviously still superior for delivering games.

If Sony can get some internet/cloud/network software help from Gaikai and license a motion sensing tech, they’ll be the top money-no-object option again. I really hope they do a 7″ gaming companion (which I what I wanted the Surface to be). I think that’s the future of family gaming, and Amazon/Google/Apple just aren’t strong enough in gaming to reach into the hardcore. It’s too bad the Valve/Sony partnership didn’t blossom, that was probably the best possibility for both companies to defend turf and make money.

One variable that isn’t mentioned is MS’ rumoured casual box. The Roku-fighter that is supposedly paired with kinect (and presumably xbl-only). That would create a new low end market with the Wii U and leave less room for Sony’s ps4 and Vita.

Sony’s best bet is probably a minor upgrade (same chip etc. as ps3 for compatibility, higher specs) with huge hdds, speaker, tv options to become the family media hub and replace the home PC. And develop a tablet controller, imo, which would eliminate the need for goofy keyboard/mouses. I think a lot of people are seriously close to replacing their PC with other tech. I’m keeping my ancient 6yr old dell running and investing in my phone and other mobile tech, lots of my friends are. The high end consoles can keep relevant by becoming jack-of-all-trades … like the ps3, and soon the xbox (adding apps and soon a browser and tablet connections which will add productivity possibilities).
