I’m an apple user but this statement is just plain ridiculous. This was made by an android dev, not google. So how are they stuck with “subpar beta” when they arent stuck with it at all. And if you look at the facts, Androids voice recognition and text-to-speech has been way more advanced than apples until siri. When apple released siri they were the ones playing catch-up. I’m an apple fanboy but i give credit where credit is due.

Alas the author is some kind of religious nutjob. Iris keeps indoctrinating you with church and jesus and shit and I really don’t want my phone or some stupid wizard running on it do that. Uninstalled and sent to software hell where it belongs. Besides, it does probably as few things as Siri did after 8 hrs – pretty much nothing but it demoes Google Voice nicely to dumb people who think it’s the app doing the recognition. It’s really sad but this will NOT be anything like Siri and if I want a pope in the pocket who keeps on blabbering about his flying spaghetti monster that makes him eff little boys in the butt, I will do so by selecting a dedicated app for that. But thanks for the effort and all.

3 years for siri and 8 hourse for iris. iris is missing some fine tunning, but it is still on par with siri. iris is really just alpha its not even beta and siri is a completed project.

I do however own an iphone 4, so if i want to take advantage of siri, by my math I must spend at least $199 and sign an additional contract for 2 years to get a feature designed for use on the iphone 3g. To me, that seems as if I am paying $199 because apple wants to sell me what I would already have. It is either an apple tax of $199 or the most expensive app ever (well maybe next to”i am rich”) Also you might want to reconsider the speech tech, it was made by nuance/vlingo, so rumors of its superiority are vastly inaccurate.

Check your sources it was submitted in 2007, published in 2010 and pulled in 2011.

The new nexus? you mean the galaxy nexus? the 1280×720, super amoled plus screened, dual core 1.5ghz, ice cream sandwich equipped, next gen 42mbps hsdpa++ equipped handset that is at least 3 years ahead of the slightly upgraded 850mhz underclocked iphone? That nexus? Nope never heard of it.

As for integration into the phone, siri MAY be integrated into the core apps for IOS, however it will never, ever, ever be released for integration with YOUR apps which renders it rather powerless compared to android solutions (of which there are quite a few) You see that is the power of android, I get to do what I want, not what the fruit company allows, and if that means I don’t know if I need an umbrella, so be it.

I have probably more experience in mobile/computer tech than any 4 people you know combined. I have developed for pretty much every major player in silicon valley, including apple. I have been in the tech industry since 1990 and have worked on every major platform and o/s. I had a newton for christ’s sake. I recieved that newton 6 months before release from apple’s head of r&d himself!
I also used/developed for magiccap prior to my experiences with apples derivatives.

You can tell this this app was thrown together in 8 hours. It sucks. I asked iris (aka dummy) how many oz. in 1 gallon and came back with 16oz.

So once again Android users are stuck with a subpar beta software. I don’t really understand why something can’t be released when it is complete and not half baked. It infuriates me when apple does this (FaceTime for instance, or even Apple TV).

I don’t accept this with my car. Can you imagine if we accepted this beta lifestyle for everything else in our life? Seatbelts that don’t work exactly as advertised, lawnmowers….they have a term for that. Lemon.

Kudos to a bunch of guys putting this together it doesn’t mean Apple is in trouble. To add..of course it means ICS is more capable but the reality is Google didn’t consider it. After all, as Rubin said, who would want to do this? Just silly Apple Fanboys, and as a silly fanboy I will take the jokes and walk away knowing that once again Google is catching up to Apple.The proof is in the numbers….4 million of them. Enjoy your beta software.

If you’re looking for functional voice recognition, then Vlingo does more things better and more reliably than Siri. Meaningful things like texting, calling, directions, launching apps, etc. It does lack in useless nonsense and parlor tricks that might impress your drunk friends.

Playing around with Iris, and the core software is not bad at all. As you said it should integrate with apps to make it more robust. Right now it’s little more than a tech demo, but impressive nonetheless.

Well this isn’t really a Google product. A developer made this in his free time, and considering that it’s not bad. Plus it’s an early alpha. If Google made this it would have been way better, probably better than Siri.
And you obviously don’t understand how Android’s open-source model works. It does have some negatives, but there are definitely some things better than iOS.

Huh? What Tax? The 4S costs the same as a lot of really bad smartphones. You see.that new Nexus? I had te Siri app on my iPhone for years, since you thought it wasn’t allowed, it is safe to assume you never used it. It is also safe to assume you don’t own a 4S, since you have clearly never used Siri.

Siri on the 4S is far better integrated and much more accurate than te app. It is decades ahead of things lie Vingo (which I have used quite a bit). The dictation is much more accurate tan Dragon’s too. You should try discussing things from perspective of experience rater than what you read in the Internet.

This reflects Foogle’s values, copy someone else shamelessly and shoddily and throw it out on the market for the fools to fine tune. Then it either gets trashed, leaving thousands of stranded users (remember Wave? Buzz? Lively? Goggles?…) or after 10 I totally unsynchronized revisions, leaves everyone in a constant state of uncertainty (ie. Android flavor of the month). Sure, Apple has Lisa, Newton, and MobileMe, but at least you know they tried hard, not just toss out garbage into our meals to learn what makes us vomit and what is edible. So while Apple does the dirty work for the masses, Google gives its dirty work to dumb asses.

Iris should have more integration with your third party apps to truely offer a different experience than Siri. Offer integration with apps such as Google Translate, Google Calendar, maybe Google Task, and other voice recognition apps that would typically use Google Voice. Give us something that can switch between two different languages without changing language settings for bilingual individuals. I’m an Android fan and I work in the mobile industry. I have to sell all platforms, but enjoy Android the most. Please for Google’s sakes, someone shut Siri the “F” up.

Huh? Perhaps you forgot that siri isn’t actually an apple product? That originally it was for android/blackberry/apple? That apple’s app gestapo refused to allow it (in 2007) Apple then bought it and called it an “upgrade” that would not run on older hardware. Even though that hardware was what it was designed to run on in the first place.

So once again, apple charges an apple tax for what it didn’t develop. Android has had voice control for years and years, siri is a minor update to a technology we already have.

And when there is an android version it will not cost me $200 plus a new contract to get it!

well why no buddy “wow ed” the android’s so called voice recognition service because its was not as good as siri , which is based on DARPA research, this was originally intended for military use in battle field , this is more than just a mere voice recognition , and soon it will transform how we interact with our devices, and then of course android can copy it . and then android so called “fans” will wow it …….lol ….. why it is always apple that has that many great ideas….. because its only the idea that matters… nothing else…

If Google tries to integrate something similar, it could be far more awesome than Siri, because unlike Apple, Android tends to open its APIs to put third-party tools on an equal footing (e.g. Send To/Share with, etc.). Imagine the following commands:

iOS always had voice activation and you could always easily dictate to the phone without flaw, Google has once again claimed as a leading feature an outdated and over-rated capability.
Also, Android supporters are once again being obtuse–intentionally or otherwise–about the implementation quality, depth, and sophistication of phone features.

While Siri is more advanced, android’s voice service isn’t really just dictation either. As one person here pointed out, his Droid 3 answered every question posed by the author correctly. My crappy old android phone will allow me to open apps, listen to music, dictate mms, email, and reminder notes, etc. Obviously Siri has passed up android on the voice service, no one doubts that, but its not revolutionary. Its just a natural progression… android will likely eventually pass Siri, and then Apple will pass android, and the horse race will continue like that forever.

This was an app developed by someone else though. I think, and I may be way off here, this app, and Siri are using a third party search engine that responds well to ‘natural voice’ phrased searches. I doubt that question ever hit google’s search. Its the app that is the problem, not android. For example, I can say “what is UK pounds to US Dollars” in to android voice dictation, and it gets it fine… that’s android’s part. Where this app is sending the info is then getting it confused.

There are many parts to voice assistant, voice capture (removing noise), voice recognition, understanding and search etc.

So the first step is voice capture, it certainly depends on how we have, I remember Google Nexus one had dual microphone to reduce noise. Can someone check iriS on a phone with dual microphones??

I think if Google decides integrate something similar to android that would be much powerful than Siri.

Google does have all the infrastructure but not integrated yet and not user friendly. If someone tried Google translate they would know.
