This could be the beginning of the end of Apple's perceived quality.

In the past, Apple has always been about doing things better (in quality) than anyone else... often by leaps and bounds.

This silly vendetta with Google has caused them to lose focus and lose sight on quality. Now, it would seem they are willing to create a maps offering that is inferior to Google's, then implement it before it's ready. If they keep heading down this path, the quality of their products are going to continue to degrade, which is a sad state of affairs.

Apple are using OpenStreetMap data outside of the US as far as the OSM community can determine. They are definitely using it in the UK. However they are using data from April 2010 and seem to be rendering paths and tracks in the same way as residential roads, so overall this makes the maps pretty poor compared with up to date OSM or Google Maps.
