NoYes

iPhoneSIMfree has finally went on sale and there are four retailer selling the iPhone unlocking kit. Wireless Imports is the first retailer to provide the iPhone unlocking solution in the United States, then in Australia there is iPhoneWorldwideUnlock, which presumably works worldwide, and they are the cheapest too, then there is 1digitalphone from Germany, and iPhone4arab in Saudi Arabia.

The US retailer is charging $99 while the Australian retailer charging a mere $50. This software based unlocking solution will probably be delivered electronically rather than physical media.

It probably won’t take long for someone to reverse engineers the code and release their own version for free. Apple would probably get pressure from AT&T to find a solution to keep the iPhone locked down to AT&T network.
