Siri is great, but it requires a powerful server. That is it consumes a large amount of data transfer. Tellme, on the other hand, operates locally on the Windows Phone. The more Ipad and Iphones are using Siri the more difficult it will become to provide bandwith to satisfy the demand. We will all pay the price for the greater demand.

Generally intelligent people who work in areas other than IT, are too busy with their own stuff to let technology come in their way.

Microsoft does nt get the meaning of this. It is too profound for them to really understand what this means. Google is in the same boat. Both care for their own developers. End users are an after thought.

A consequence of this rotten mindset causes them to not see the difference between getting a precise answer from phones and letting the end user figure it out himself.

Natural language processing may not be a big deal to basement dwelling .NET developers ( or as a matter of fact any basement dwelling software developer ) but it is a big deal to common folks. ( I use the phrase basement dwelling deliberately here because there indeed are good software developers out there who also have good common sense. I don't want to trivialize them)

You see there is a saying called - simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. It really is extremely difficult to simplify complex tasks. Apple excels in this. Asking whether I need an umbrella today and getting a precise answer yes or no, is beautifully simple and extremely sophisticated to implement.

The rest of the industry and their fanbois have no clue what simplicity means. In fact most of times they dismiss the simplicity implicit in Apple's designs because they mistakenly believe that reduction in choice that simplicity brings is a bad thing to have. The analogy of Windows and Android fanbois is that of a stick shift car salesman who promotes his stick shift car as something that offers choice to the end user in changing gears and hence being superior to automatic transmission cars. However common folks actually love automatic transmission cars as they simplify car driving experience. Stick shift might be great for expert drivers who can optimize the car performance as much as they please, but for common folks it really does not matter.

PS: common folks need not necessarily mean dumb idiots, they also include people like myself who happen to have a PhD in materials science. I bet I know far more on Materials Science than a basement dwelling software developer. And I love natural language processing.

It really is a big deal.

I can't see why asking if I need an umbrella is any better than asking the phone to pop up the local weather app. It's hardly a 'big fail' whatever happens.

Technologically Siri may be streets ahead of the competition but as a real world benefit, the advance is marginal at best.

@google-9da8b1954519c2907a8c17fee107aa10:disqus

Being an American I don't have an English accent and I use Tellme all the time on my Android phone in the Bing app and it works just fine. Of course I've never really tried to dictate an entire paragraph, converse with it, asked it the meaning of life or who/what it is... I've also never thanked it for anything, all of which you can do with Siri, if you're either bored, lonely or just stupid. Because I'm not a nerd and don't need a digital girlfriend. I just need the app to return relevant search results and it works almost every time. As far as accents go there is this vid with a heavily hungarian accent and another with a heavily Indian accent on the web comparing voice on both platforms and in both instances Tellme appears, when correctly used, to understand the user on the first pass BETTER than Siri does (for those of us not fortunate enough to have an Australian accent which Siri appears to favor). This probably has something to do with the fact that Tellme is used to power customer service call centers all over the world and has been able to leverage all the real world accents it hears whereas Siri has probably been taught accent recognition in an r&d lab. Brandon by "a lot of people" you must mean yourself, try Tellme in the Bing app for web searches, use it to find things on the web to do so you can get out of your mom's house and stop talking to your phone. I guarantee you will EVER find the meaning of life on an Apple device but someday you might actually be able to use your voice to launch one of the 500,000 apps you've loaded on your phone and then never used. A function strangely missing from the, "there's an app for that" set.

What a great comparison, I remember when I had an iPhone and used Siri as an app before Apple bought them, it was a really cool app. I've since switched to WP7 and I love it! I do wish that Tellme did more though, such as the location aware reminders that Siri has, but, I really love the hands-free text experience with WP7, top notch!

I love these 2 word messages - great way to see how accurate the speech to text abilities are like... With my iPhone 4S I can write a 5 paragraph story by voice with ?, !, " and so much more. I'd like to see a comparison that goes deeper than "Hello John"

This is no surprise, TellMe is more advanced than Siri. I am rather surprised at how Apple fanatics respond to Microsoft having better technologies than Apple. This is only one of many much more such technologies. Real phone users can testify that WP7 is a better extension of your desktop/laptop than an iPhone. The number of apps available is not important, what is important is having the essential apps. Just like comparing PC to Mac, PCs have millions of apps compared to Macs but how much of it does the average user ever use?

I remember several years ago before bing was coined, my old OLD non smartphone had voice searching via some type of windows live feature that was on the phone and it worked really well so I'm not surprise that TellMe would work well.

yeah, seems like with the exception of calendar integration TellMe is MORE capable that Siri. I guess if you're a lonely, basement dwelling nerd who needs to have "conversations" with electronics then Siri is the right choice for you but I have conversations with actual people so I just need my phone to return the information I ask for.

Seems pretty clear, at least to anybody that isn't a smug idiot, that like ALL tools you have to use both Siri and Tellme correctly - and if you do the results are generally positive. The integration and capabilities of both are pretty impressive and this rag outfit Tech AU and Jason should be ashamed for trying to pass off their Apple Siri promotional video as a valid comparison. Tech AU are the ONLY ones that got such poor results using TellMe so it's clearly Jason and not the platform.

Gotcha -- so, if you speak ordinary English, get the iPhone, but if you have a strong Hungarian accent, it has to be TellMe. Now we know.
