iPhone Hacker planning security crack live on video

I’m not sure whether that’s meant to be a weasel or an otter (or a stoat, maybe?), but either way O’Reilly are preparing for a sneaky hacking webcast in which Jonathan Zdziarski will apparently demonstrate a method of bypassing the iPhone’s passcode lock using a custom firmware bundle.  The 45 minute presentation is intended for “law enforcement and anyone else who has a need to access the not-so-readily available data on an iPhone.”

Zdziarski is the programmer behind NES.app, the first iPhone application to take advantage of the major iPhone APIs.  He was also one of the people responsible for initially cracking the iPhone for unofficial third-party apps. 

The webcast will take place on Thursday, September 11, 2008. It’s free to register, and you can do so here.  Presumably Zdziarski’s method is more complicated than the current 2.0.2 iPhone firmware security flaw, whereby you can bypass the passcode lock by double-clicking the home button and navigating from the Contacts page.
