iPhone gobbles up 40% of smartphone market according to AdMob

We all know that the iPhone is wildly popular and has sold as many units as Apple could make in many countries. To get an idea of how much of the market the average smartphone brand holds, we look at the percentage of mobile ads that are served the devices mobile browser.

According to AdMob, the iPhone now holds 40% of the market after only being available for two years. The major growth of the iPhone comes at the expense of Nokia and RIM who both lost ground over the period that the iPhone grew.

Apple isn't the only company growing market share with its device. The Android platform gained 7% and the webOS platform gained 4% over the same period. I am surprised that webOS went from nothing to 4% of the market in such a short period; it has only been around for a few months.
