iPhone 6 rumor roundup: new name, battery, and availability

There has been a lot of talk about the iPhone 6 in its 4.7-inch form factor, but little spilled about the larger-than-life iPhone. A 5.5-inch screen is said to make an appearance alongside the 4.7-inch version, but what will it be called? Is it just the same specs in a larger shell? New reports tell us a bit of what we want to know.

Apple loves to get cute with device naming, leaving us to assume something a bit more than we probably should. Was the "C" in the iPhone 5C meant as "color"? A new rumor suggests the biggest iPhone 6 could be called the iPhone 6 Plus, or iPhone 6+ if you like. It would be the first time Apple used "plus" in naming a device, and leave a second generation iPhone 6 open to using the "S" moniker, as Apple is wont to do.

The battery on the iPhone 6 5.5-inch model aims to double-down on battery life, should you upgrade from the iPhone 5S. A new video set to terrible music shows a long, thin battery that smacks of Apple's current iPhone battery — just larger. At 2915 mAh, it's definitely not anything we currently see from Apple. Between it and the improved "what's eating my battery" notifications in iOS 8, you could end up with a significant improvement in battery life versus your current iPhone.

This bigger, badder iPhone — when can you get it? According to some reports, it will be available alongside the iPhone 6 4.7-inch model. The bad news is that it may come in limited quantities, making it a hot commodity. Still believed to arrive September 19, the iPhone 6 Plus (yeah, we'll just go with that for right now) might end up in the hands of those silly enough to get in line first.
